What is a virtual class?

Virtual Campus

In a virtual campus, instruction and support services are conducted remotely, using various technologies for synchronous and asynchronous communication and activities. The goal of the virtual campus is to provide instruction and support services while maintaining physical distance between individuals (students, faculty, staff).

Teaching activities are carried out online using various technologies, including learning management systems, videoconferencing, phone, and email. A virtual learning environment, like a physical one, utilizes effective practices for pacing, scaffolding, collaboration, and interaction. This can be achieved through synchronous as well as asynchronous activities.

Academic & Student Support Services

Like instruction, academic and student support services are carried out online using various technologies, including phone, videoconferencing, and email. Just as in a physical campus, the goal is to provide students equitable access to services, through both drop-in and appointment-based methods. Like instruction, this can be achieved through synchronous as well as asynchronous activities.

Asynchronous Delivery

Instruction or service is conducted between faculty/support staff and students outside the constraints of time and place. Students are allowed to choose the time of day or days on which to complete assignments or engage with support services within a class or service schedule.

Synchronous Delivery

Instruction or service is conducted between the faculty/support staff in real-time, with participants engaging in learning and communication at the same time, according to a set schedule.

Should you accidentally be bounced from the room, please try refreshing your browser.

Laptop loaner program

With the Governor's new shelter in place order, we regret our laptop loaner program is temporarily suspended.

However,  we are brainstorming ideas of how to continue to support those of you that still need laptops for spring classes. For now, you may apply for our Emergency Relief Fund. See below.

Accessing Assignments from Home (Tests, Labs, Etc.)

Remote Access to Assignments

If the campus is closed, you may still need to keep up with your assignments remotely. Below are some tools and tips to help you stay caught up.

Electronic Assignments

To help you complete assignments on the go, the following apps are available in both the Android and iOS app stores:

Downloadable Canvas app to complete and/or submit assignments.

Downloadable Zoom app  that allows you to videoconference with your instructor.

Hands-on Assignments (i.e. Labs)

Check with your instructor to determine whether or not the deadline has changed or if the assignment has been modified.

If you have a hands on component to your class connect with your instructor for further plans on how these classes will be conducted.

Student Support for Online and Hybrid Classes

If you are new to online learning or need general support, please visit the Online Learning website for students.

Courses that would have been regularly held in person will be held using virtual methods for the foreseeable future. During this time, these courses will be considered as hybrid courses for immigration purposes, which is allowable per federal regulations. The International Student Office will continue to communicate with you directly.

Be sure to contact your instructor to determine if any deadlines or submission requirements have changed. If you get no response, contact International Student Programs.

Pacific Dining food services provided by the cafeteria and all KJ’s Coffee locations will be closed until further notice.
