Glossary of Terms

Name

Definition

A-Budget

Represents designated funding. It is used for salaries and benefits.

Achievement Gap

The disparity in measurable academic success and retention among different segments of students, particularly observed by race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic class.

Assessment

Methods employed to gather evidence and evaluate quality

Assessment Cycle

The process through which student learning outcomes are defined, assessed, reflected upon, revised, and documented.

Assessment Strategies

A strategic choice of assessment method selected with the curriculum, classroom context, and student demographics in mind.

B-Budget

Represents discretionary funding. It is used for supplies, casual hourly and all other operating expenses such as repairs, travel, postage, etc., that are the college’s obligations.

Classroom Teaching FTEF

Sum of teaching load factors for Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters by assignment type, excluding reassignments.

College Skills Foundation skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and
English as a Second Language, as well as learning skills and study skills, which are necessary for students to succeed in college-level work. Commonly referred to as basic skills.

Collegial

Participative and mutually respectful interactions across the college.

Credit Courses

Credit courses are intended to prepare students for degree and certificate programs, transfer and employment. The content and objectives are "college level, " student evaluation includes extensive use of essay, testing and comparable instructional evaluation techniques, high critical thinking expectation, limited repeatability, and for fees.

Critical Issues

Concerns that create major problems in running the department or division, such as facilities, impacted or declining enrollments in programs, and personnel.

Cultural Competency To be determined.

Curriculum Alignment

Highly developed curriculum alignment is when pedagogy, grading, curriculum, relevant student support services, and co-curriculum are explicitly and intentionally aligned with each outcome with increasing levels of proficiency mapped clearly.

Curriculum Review

Annual reviews of total curriculum packages for programs and matriculation concerns.

Curriculum Status Updates

Curriculum updates including Title V regulations and textbook currency.

DARED

The acronym of a complete assessment cycle: Define outcome, Assess it, Reflect on the data collected, Enhance curriculum with the data in mind, Document the changes/discussion.

Day classes

Classes offered on weekdays in the morning and afternoon.

Dialogue

Self-reflective exchanges engaged in by the college community, characterized by a fee exchange of ideas without the purpose of defending or deciding on a course of action.

Diverse Learners Any learner who displays or establishes differences in the following ways: race; ethnicity; cultural background; linguistic background; age; religion; gender; sexual orientation; learning, emotional, or physical disability; giftedness; socioeconomic status; or at-risk status.

Diversity Equity Elements

Educational opportunity for all as measured by the indicators of overall coordination; access; course completion (retention); ESL and basic skills completion; degree and certificate completion; and transfer.

Education Code

The Education Code that contains California law governing education in the state.

Enrollment/Grades (Fiscal Year)

Enrollment: Total duplicated enrollment for the Fiscal Year.

External factors

Factors that affect program outcomes that stem from external sources, such as the economy, job markets, global issues, etc.

Evening Classes

Classes offered weekday evenings and on weekends.

F2F Instruction

Classroom, laboratory, or online hybrid instruction.

FTEF: Full-Time Equivalent Faculty

An instructor load of 100%, which ranges between .9500 and 1.049 load. An FTEF can consist of one full-time faculty or several part-time instructors whose loads add up to 100%.

FTES: Full-Time Equivalent Student

The number of students in attendance as determined by actual count for each class hour of attendance or by prescribed census periods.

Full-Time Faculty

An instructor that carries a load between .9500 and 1.049 throughout Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

Full-Time Student

A student enrolled in 12 or more units during the current quarter.

Institutional SLOs

Foothill's institutional student learning outcomes or core competencies include critical thinking, communication, computation, and citizenship/global consciousness.

Noncredit Courses

Noncredit is community college instruction that has no credit associated with it. Students who enroll in noncredit courses do not receive any type of college credit for these courses, nor do they receive official grades. Noncredit courses are intended to provide students with lifelong learning, college transfer and career preparation opportunities. Noncredit courses require no fees on the part of students. Noncredit instruction can only be offered in specific areas detailed in regulation and Education Code.

Online Instruction

Courses listed in the class schedule that have a “W” in the section code.

Ongoing

Addressed regularly as part of the business of the department or division rather than in response to periodic external requirements.

Part-Time Faculty

Any instructor currently with a teaching load of less than .6000 through out Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

Part-Time Student

A student enrolled in less than 12 units during the current quarter.

Productivity (Quarterly)

The efficiency with which resources are used. It is calculated by dividing the quarterly WSCH by the quarterly FTEF.

Productivity (Fiscal Year)

Four-term total WSCH / four-term total FTEF, excluding reassignments. District budgeted productivity is around 535 WSCH/FTEF each year. Each decrease of 10 WSCH/FTEF in district-wide productivity equates to about $1,000,000 in additional costs.

Qualitative Data

Data relating to, or involving quality or kind, which cannot be represented numerically, such as portfolios of work, narrative description and evaluation of a performance, learner description and analysis of a learning experience

Data which can be represented numerically

Reassigned FTEF

 Sum of load in 994, 995, 998, and 999 courses.

Retention

Percentage of students who complete a course to its end, regardless of final grade.

Seat Hours

Hours a student is in a class during the quarter.

Segmentation

Demographic groupings and classification of students.

Service Utilization

The number of students using a service provided by a division or department, such as tutoring, advising, or other forms of assistance.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

Knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that a student has attained at the end (or as a result) of his or her engagement in a particular set of collegiate experiences.

Success % (Fiscal Year)

Success rate for the Fiscal Year.

Success rate

Percentage of students who earned a C or better.

Title 5

Education section of Barclay’s California Code of Regulations. Contains education regulations adopted by the State Senates, the Department of Education and the California Community College System Office, among other agencies.

Trends

Consistent patterns, directions, and/or tendencies over a period of time.

Underrep Enrollment

Percent of underrepresented (Asian, Black, Filipino, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander) student enrollment.

Underrep Success

Success rate of underrepresented students.

Unique Courses

Course that do not follow the usual guidelines, such as courses that term-spanning, year-long, or non-WSCH generating.

WASC

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States.

WSCH %

Percent of WSCH produced by 0 and 3 assignment types for Academic Year (Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters).

WSCH

Weekly student contact hours.
45 WSCH = 1 FTES
1 WSCH = 11.67 seat hours
525 seat hours = 1 FTES (45 WSCH x 11.67 weeks)
