What is Academic Coaching?

Academic Coaching serves to increase academic success and persistence as students complete their coursework and move toward educational goal.

Our Academic Coaches have a background in Counseling and Education and are professional staff members or established graduate students. They are a part of a team including Academic Counselors and Disability Specialists, who are all invested in student success.

Academic Coaching services are available to students who are registered with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) or the Veterans Resource Center (VRC). Coaching is an Accommodation that is assigned by an Academic Counselor, in the initial Intake meeting.

Academic Coaching Postcard

Academic Coaches will work with students with disabilities on a one-to-one basis and also offer a series of workshops in the following areas:

  • Time management
  • Self-advocacy
  • Short and long term planning
  • Note-taking and study skills
  • Organization
  • Test preparation
  • Reduction of test anxiety
  • Utilization of technology
  • Stress reduction
  • School, life and work balance

Is it Tutoring?

Academic Coaches do not tutor students in course content. However, an Academic Coach can refer to appropriate tutoring services as needed. Coaches will assist students in clarifying assignments and developing an action plan for success and completion.

Is it Counseling?

Academic Coaches do not prepare Educational Plans, select courses for students or set up accommodations. These are the tasks of the Academic Counselors. Coaches assist with booking testing accommodations, registration, Canvas navigation and offer overviews of services and resources on campus.

Foothill’s Academic Coaches maintain confidentiality and have an understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

If you are interested in discussing  coaching or meeting with a coach, talk with your Academic Counselor. To schedule an appointment  please call the DRC at (650) 949-7017 or email us at drc@fhda.edu.
