Welcome!

The field of environmental horticulture is quite broad encompassing the functional, aesthetic, and environmentally sound creation and care of our landscapes. Green industry professionals work with our urban and natural spaces on a daily basis, improving our quality of life and ensuring the sustainability of our environment.

The Program

The Foothill College Environmental Horticulture & Design Program provides a quality, comprehensive core curriculum taught by many of the best instructors in the Bay Area. Our faculty emphasize instruction with a hands-on approach based in both theoretical and practical knowledge.

While enrolled in the Horticulture Program, you’ll learn to combine principles of environmental design, construction and maintenance practices for urban, rural and natural landscapes. You will also learn about the range of business services and manufacturing industries supporting the environmental horticulture or ‘‘green’’ industry.

At Foothill, you can earn an Associate in Science degree, Career Certificate or core Skills Certificate in Environmental Horticulture & Design. In addition to core classes, our flexible program is designed with over 35 elective courses which allow students to focus their career training in a variety of specializations. This system also enables us to offer special interest and professional growth classes to landscape professionals and homeowners. To meet students varied schedules, both day and evening classes are scheduled.

Whether you are training for a new career, currently a landscape professional, or simply a homeowner looking for information on what nutrients to use for your plants, we have classes geared fit to your needs.

If I can be of any assistance in your quest for knowledge, don't hesitate to call me at (650) 949-7402 or email me at svensondaniel@foothill.edu.

About the Environmental Horticulture and Design Program

Environmental Horticulture and Design presents a broad offering of courses to job seekers and interested public. Our Skills Certificate, Career Certificate, and AS Degree tracks require students complete a curriculum that includes introductory courses in basic botany, plant identification, pest identification and management, construction, design, irrigation, plant care, and practical experience. The Career Certificate and AS tracks allow the student to dig deeper into specialized topics such as design, advanced construction, turf management, specialty plant identification, greenhouse and nursery management, and plant propagation. For those interested in obtaining information but not a credential, short courses offer a chance to pick up skills ranging from home irrigation systems to pruning trees. The curriculum at Foothill serves as the foundation for many who are interested in starting their own design, construction, or maintenance business, and for those who are interested in continuing their education or entering the workforce in one of the many green industry fields.

Program Mission

Our mission is to blend theoretical knowledge regarding horticulture with practical application of horticultural technique in all of our offerings.

Program Goals

Environmental Horticulture and Design serves those students who are seeking entry-level positions in the field, employees who are seeking advancement, students planning to continue their education, and gardeners who are seeking fulfillment in their work. By offering a diversity of classes covering a wide range of topics, our curriculum allows each of these students to pursue their own educational goals.
