Discover the Universe at Foothill College! A wide range of academic and public programs in astronomy are offered both during the day and in the evening.

The Astronomy Department at Foothill College offers lecture and laboratory classes conducted by Andrew Fraknoi. Courses in solar system and stellar astronomy provide students with a non-technical introduction to the development of solar systems, the life and death of stars, the formation of galaxies, and the evolution of the universe.

Located on campus, the Foothill Observatory provides students and members of the community with the opportunity for first-hand exploration of the wonders of the universe. Regularly scheduled public programs provide close-up views of the sun, moon, stars, and planets through the observatory's telescopes.

In cooperation with the Peninsula Astronomical Society, Foothill College is regularly visited by noted guest-lecturers in astronomy. Previous speakers have included Clyde Tombaugh recounting his discovery of the planet Pluto, and Professor Geoff Marcy of San Francisco State University making the first announcement of the discovery of one of the planets his team has found around other stars. The Peninsula Astronomical Society holds its meetings on the campus of Foothill College on the second Friday of each month. Meetings feature lectures by prominent members of the professional and amateur communities, and are open to the public.
