A Student Tests Positive for COVID-19
REGARDLESS OF VACCINATION STATUS
- If a student tests positive for COVID, they need to isolate for 10 days away from campus even if fully vaccinated.
- A student’s isolation date begins the first date they had symptoms. IF they don't have symptoms, the isolation date starts on the date they were tested for COVID.
- It's important to understand that a student is infectious even if they are fully vaccinated. This is why they must stay home and remain off campus during their isolation period.
A Student Was Exposed to a COVID-Positive Person (within six-feet for more than 15 minutes)
Are they FULLY vaccinated?
YES—fully vaccinated:
- If a student has symptoms, they must quarantine for 10 days. Also, they must get tested 5 days after they were exposed to COVID.
- If they don't have symptoms, they need to get tested 5 days after they were exposed to COVID. (They don't need to quarantine).
- If the test results come back positive, see #1.
NO—not fully vaccinated:
- Even if a student doesn’t have symptoms, they must quarantine for 10 days (even if they have a negative COVID test result).
- With testing, quarantine can end after Day 7 if a diagnostic specimen collected on
or after Day 5 from the date of last exposure is negative AND 24 hours or more after
fever resolution AND improvement in other symptoms, whichever is longer.
- A household close contact (regardless of vaccination status) with ongoing exposure
should be tested three times:
- Immediately AND
- 2.5 days after first exposure to case AND
- 3.5 days after case completes their isolation period.

A Student Has COVID-19 Symptoms
Are they FULLY vaccinated?
YES—fully vaccinated:
- They must isolate for 10
- During that time, they must get a COVID test.
- If their test result is negative, they can end their isolation period and return to
NO—not fully vaccinated:
- They must isolate for 10 days regardless of a negative COVID test.
- Isolation starts from the first they had symptoms.
A Student Traveled Outside California
Are they FULLY vaccinated?
YES—fully vaccinated:
- They need to monitor them- selves for COVID-19 symptoms for 14 days after returning home.
- No quarantine needed.
NO—not fully vaccinated:
- They must get tested 5 days after returning home.
- They must quarantine for 10 days after returning home.
- If they test negative and don't have symptoms, they can return to campus 7 days after returning home.
- If they test negative yet have symptoms, see #3.
A Student Traveled on an International Flight
Are they FULLY vaccinated?
YES—fully vaccinated:
- They must get tested 5 days after returning home.
- If their test result is positive, see #1.
- They need to monitor themselves for COVID-19 symptoms for full 14 days after returning home.
- No quarantine needed.
NO—not fully vaccinated:
- They must get tested 5 days after returning home.
- They must quarantine for 10 days after returning home.
- If they test negative and don't have symptoms, they can return to campus 7 days after returning home.
