Foothill helps East Palo Alto woman redefine herself and her future

A cancer survivor and caregiver to her aging parents, Ruth Talamoa is very familiar with challenges. Despite a diagnosis of multiple myeloma that has left her permanently disabled, the 33-year-old resident of East Palo Alto will not let blood cancer prevent her from earning degrees in psychology, biology and oncology.

In addition to completing her associate degree in psychology at Foothill College this summer, Talamoa returned to Foothill his fall and hopes to earn an associate degree in biology, while concurrently enrolling in upper-division courses at CSU East Bay. She intends to pursue a career that combines these academic disciplines, and will allow her to provide meaningful support and counseling to other cancer patients and their loved ones.

"I know how it feels to have cancer, endure treatments and go to endless doctor appointments," she says. "I want to motivate cancer patients to not give up on their goals, their futures and their lives. I want patients and their families to know that we can get through it together. I refuse to let my pain keep me from living and learning."

Planning and Resource Council (PaRC) Update

Below is a summary of the action and information items from the most recent Planning and Resource Council (PaRC) meetings. For complete minutes and first-reads, please visit the PaRC website.
 
IP&B TASKFORCE RECOMMENDATIONS
PaRC approved a proposal to pilot using TracDact, a software currently used to track student learning outcomes, for program review. The group also approved keeping the current program review cycle in which divisions complete a comprehensive program review every three years.

INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY PRIORITIZATION FOR 2016-2017
President Nguyen announced that District approved filling all vacant faculty positions along with the failed searches from 2015-2016 for a total of 14 new full-time faculty hires. PaRC then approved the revised faculty prioritization list and deans were advised to begin forming search committees.

WORKFORCE & GRANTS EXPENDITURE PLANNING
Dawn Girardelli provided a quick summary of the process by which PERKINS and CTE funding allocations were made. She noted that $1.2 million in total is available, with 25% of those funds being reserved for regional work. The workgroup looked at items that could be funded in order to immediately spend down the money. They also noted that the some of the items in Program Review that are prioritized by OPC could be funded by CTE money, as opposed to B-Budget. It was encouraged that such resource requests be put in program review and they be identified as either CTE-related or regional in nature, as multiple funding sources may be available.
 
PROGRAM REVIEW (ANNUAL & COMPREHENSIVE) TEMPLATES FOR 2016-2017
No changes were made to last year's templates, other than updating the year, so PaRC approved the templates.

HUMANITIES CERTIFICATE
After listening to an endorsement by the Transfer Workgroup, PaRC approved the creation of a new humanities certificate.

NON-CREDIT EMT CERTIFICATE  
 PaRC also approved the creation a non-credit EMT certificate, which qualifies as enhanced non-credit and is eligible for apportionment.  

FTES UPDATES & NEWS
Due to federal regulations, Foothill will no longer be offering an early summer session. Deans are currently working on a late spring session to help recoup some of the FTES the college earned during early summer.
 
Join your colleagues at a free performance of Our Town

One of the most produced plays in history, Thornton Wilder's Our Town tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover's Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens. The Theatre Art Program invites all faculty, staff, and administrators to a special FREE performance of Our Town on Thursday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lohman Theatre.

To claim your free ticket, stop by the Fine Arts and Communication Division Office between 7:30 a.m. - 4:40 p.m. There are 120 tickets available and they will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. If you can't make it next Thursday, the production, directed by Bruce McLeod and featuring students from the Foothill Theatre Arts Program, runs through Sunday, November 20.
 
  
Health Services offering discounted flu vaccine to employees and students 
   
It's flu season so protect yourself with the flu vaccine. Health Services is offering the vaccine for only $5 to currently enrolled students and $22 for staff. Bring your photo ID and if a student, a current class schedule. Vaccinations are available from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on the following dates:

November is Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American History Month and Foothill College is celebrating with a series of events. Join ASFC on Wednesday, November 9 at 12 noon in the Toyon Room for a lecture with alumna Ayse Gursoz, who will speak about water protectors standing up against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Medicine Road, the Bay Area's own Native American rock group, will perform in the Campus Center Dining Room on Wednesday, November 30 from 12 noon - 1 p.m.

 
Come discuss the election results with the Political Science and Sociology Departments

One of most publicized presidential elections in recent history will be decided next week and the Foothill Political Science and Sociology Departments are getting together to discuss the results. Join them on Thursday, November 10 at 12 noon in room 3304 and share your thoughts. No RSVP is needed, but please encourage students to attend. 
 
Encourage students to meet with a counselor before graduation and CSU transfer application deadline
 
Please remind students that deadline to petition for fall quarter graduation is Thursday, December 1. If you intend to graduate at the end of this quarter, you're responsible for scheduling a required 30-minute petition consultation with a Foothill counselor. Appointments may be scheduled online.

Additionally, the deadline to submit an application to transfer to a CSU in fall 2017 is Wednesday, November 30. Counseling has a number of appointments available for students to meet with a counselor prior to the deadline. 
 
Sign up now for American Red Cross blood drive

Foothill is teaming up with the American Red Cross for a blood drive on Wednesday, November 9 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Hearthside Lounge. If you are at least 17 years old, weight at least 110 pounds, and are free of cold and flu symptoms, please sign up at redcrossblood.org and enter "Foothill" in the "Find a Blood Drive" box. Remember, a single pint of blood can save up to three lives!

ASFC hosting free Thanksgiving dinner for students
 
Many of our students don't have family to celebrate the holidays with or are unable to travel home. To help, ASFC is hosting an early Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday,
November 17 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. on the Library Quad. In addition to a full Thanksgiving dinner, students will be treated to a "drive-in" movie. Admission is free.

Have you heard? Foothill College and the Foothill-De Anza Foundation are participating in #GivingTuesday on Tuesday, November 29!

What is #GivingTuesday? Well, we have a day for giving thanks and we have Black Friday and Cyber Monday for getting deals. After those two days of deals comes #GivingTuesday, a worldwide event that is dedicated to giving back to the causes that matter the most to you.

Our goal is to increase awareness and support for our efforts to change student lives at Foothill. The foundation provides direct student assistance for items such as textbook vouchers, scholarships, and internships, making a critical difference in the academic lives of thousands of students every year-and enables Foothill to deliver on its core value of open access education.

Foothill College Good News Corner!
 
Foothill College's Anthropology Summer Abroad Program in County Roscommon, Ireland, received some high praise from U.S. Ambassador Kevin O'Malley. In The Irish Times Magazine's July 1 edition, O'Malley states that one of the highlights of his tenure as U.S. Ambassador was his visit to the Foothill program's archaeological dig in Roscommon last year. "The dig was being carried out by a group of American and Irish students," he states in the article. "As we pulled into the town, the streets were lined with schoolchildren waving American flags-that was a really touching moment for my wife and I." Now in its second year, the Anthropology Summer Abroad Program serves as an enriching educational experience for students, while also providing significant benefit to the local community of Clonalis, and County Roscommon. Foothill Anthropology Instructors Sam Connell and Kathryn Maurer started the program.
