College Skills at Foothill
Based on campus conversations
last year we are renaming Basic
Skills on Foothill campus to College Skills. Anything still called Basic Skills
Initiative (BSI) pertains directly to
some aspect of California’s statewide
basic skills initiative, funding, and
expenditures plan. See the History & Context Page for more detailed information.
As a college, we are in the process of putting
together the College Skills
Steering Committee to direct and
implement the BSI Action Plan
developed last year, as well as add
new initiatives through research
and staff development activities.
We filed our initial five-year BSI
action plan with the State, and
the steering committee will be
developing related resource allocation planning for this year in conjunction with the President's Roundtable.
In addition to the steering
committee, we will continue to
have College Skills Committee
meetings to continue this process of change.
Discussions
Conversations around improving campus skills are continually happening across campus. The Discussions page attempts to capture many of these conversations and presentations. Go to the Discussions Page.
Our Action Plan
Using the investigative work that over 40 faculty and staff did for the Basic Skills Initiative last year, we have developed a preliminary action item list to accomplish the recommendations. Although the College Skills Steering Committee is in the process of building individual action items for many of the recommendations, we wanted to give you the heads up about this year and include you in effecting positive change in your areas - starting now for our basic skills students. Many of the plans can be quickly initiated by the right person in your divisions and departments, while others obviously need more dialogue and collaboration.
The BSI_ActionItems.xls spreadsheet is set up so that the first worksheet is all the recommendations from all the areas sorted by Completion Date. The rest of the worksheets are set up so that each area has two worksheets. The first area-specific worksheet lists the primary overarching objectives that each basic skills team recommended. The second area-specific worksheet is an incomplete list of the action items or tasks that we all need to do in order to complete the primary objectives. As everyone reports back to the College Skills Steering Committee on the status of their projects, the BSI_ActionItems.xls spreadsheet will be updated - so check back to keep current on the changes taking place at Foothill.
