Math and Physics Shows
The Foothill College Mathematics Department invited local elementary and middle school students and their families to join in the fifth annual Let’s Play Math event. This year, we presented some new tools. Attendees played with fun Math tools and observed interesting mathematical facts behind them in this free event. Here is some of what they experienced:
Would you like to find your body’s golden ratio as you measure your height? Why is a honey comb hexagon-shaped? Which ball on the four slides will reach the bottom first if each ball starts rolling at the same time? What happens when you play pool on an elliptical table or a rectangular table?
Come and explore the answers to these questions and others. Guests will have the opportunity to play with mathematical toys and experience how fun math can be. Other activities include tangrams, origami, linker cubes, challenging math-related games, and more.
Each year the Physics Department at Foothill College puts on a show for the community suitable for the entire family. It is a series of fun, exciting demonstrations of the laws of nature. The show has grown from an audience of about 200 people in 2007 to over 10,000 by the end of 2013."Thank you for the incredible show this weekend. I saw some of your photos from past performances and couldn't wait to bring my children. I was worried that they may be too young but they were both engaged for the entire show. I was amazed with the level of detail they were able to recount the show when describing it to their grandparents over the phone." - Fall Show Attendee
The Fall Physics Show is over and was a huge success. Every show sold out and 4,500 people attended. In January we will have a new set of performances. Stay tuned!
