Student Learning Outcomes -
  • Perform with increased proficiency the skill sets and techniques of intermediate doubles tennis.
  • Demonstrate and explain the basic strategies of intermediate doubles tennis.
Description -
Reviews strategy for intermediate doubles play. Includes introduction to volley, overhead, approach shots, service, return and poaching.

Course Objectives -
The student will be able to:
  1. Identify modified court positions
  2. Analyze court awareness with shot selection/placement
  3. Practice service and return and poaching
  4. Demonstrate fundamentals of volley, approach, and overhead shots
  5. Develop direction and placement of the volley shot
Special Facilities and/or Equipment -
Tennis court, tennis balls and tennis racket.

Course Content (Body of knowledge) -
Instructor lecture and demonstration will teach:
  1. Identify court positions
    1. Defensive, 2 on the baseline
    2. Offensive, 2 at the net
  2. Court Awareness and shot selection
    1. Deep balls, keep cross court
    2. Short balls, approach and come in behind
    3. Offensive shot, hit down the line
  3. Service and return and poaching
    1. Close the net off diagonally
    2. Hit to the open court
    3. Have partner cover the when you poach
  4. Doubles specific shots
    1. Volley
    2. Overhead
    3. Approach Shot
  5. Volley direction and placement
    1. Low volley, hit back to where it came from or crosscourt
    2. High Volley, change direction, hit at feet of opponent
    3. Down the middle
Methods of Evaluation -
  1. Physical skills and techniques will be assessed by direct instructor observation.
  2. Evaluation of knowledge of tennis strategy as well as execution of shot placement.
  3. Written final exam
