1. Description -
This course looks at current and past sports related cultural and historical issues and practices to study the role of sport in society.
Prerequisite: None
Co-requisite: None
Advisory: Not open to students with credit in H P 1B.

2. Course Objectives -
The student will be able to
  1. Define and discuss social theories and the development of sport in society past and present.
  2. Analyze and discuss who plays sport, why and how it influences development.
  3. Discuss and analyze ethics and violence in sport.
  4. Evaluate and analyze the role of race, ethnicity, culture and gender in sport and society.
  5. Explain the role of politics and sport and how government and globalization influence sports.
  6. Analyze the role of media and its influence on sport.
  7. Discuss and develop theories on the future of sport and the athlete

When taught as an online distance learning or hybrid sections, students and faculty need ongoing and continuous internet and email access.

4. Course Content (Body of knowledge) -
  1. Define and discuss social theories and the development of sport in society past and present.
    1. Study and evaluate Maslow's heirarchy of need and its role in sport education
    2. Analyze the social development of the athlete and the nature of "team"
    3. Compare and contrast the individual athlete to the team player
  2. Analyze and discuss who plays sport, why and how it influences development
    1. Discuss children's sport teams
    2. Explain social class and its potential role in sport selection
    3. Analyze education and the role of sport at college and high school
  3. Discuss and analyze ethics and violence in sport
    1. Explain blood doping
    2. Discuss on field/court incidents and media's role in sport violence
    3. Explain drugs and alcohol and their role in sport
    4. Discuss and evaluate the use of sport supplements and sport ethics
  4. Evaluate and analyze the role of race, ethnicity, culture and gender in sport and society
    1. Analyze and discuss gender participation issues and controversies
    2. Analyze and discuss race and ethnicity and the role of sport and the athlete in changing society and values.
    3. Compare and contrast cultural development and the sport influence
  5. Explain the role of politics and sport and how government and globalization influence sports
    1. Discuss history and changes of sports and world competitions
    2. Study and analyze the political issues that have marked sporting events
    3. Analyze the role of government wealth and influence of sport development
  6. Analyze the role of media and its influence and impact on sport
    1. Discuss the behavior, role and media representation of the "notorious" cases involving athletes
    2. Analyze sport coverage nationally and internationally
    3. Discuss sport and media, can they survive without each other
  7. Discuss and develop ideas on the future of sport and the athlete
    1. Analyze emerging sports
    2. Discuss seeding and collegiate championships and how the process is changing
    3. Analyze the role of the professional athlete on the changing rules of sport

6. Methods of Evaluation -
  1. Film analysis
    1. From a list of 25 films, choose five and write five (5) two page papers analyzing the role of the sport and the athlete on changing vaules.
  2. Group project
    1. Students work in small groups to develop a classroom presentation demonstrating the value of the team concept in academic success, individual values and the role of athletics and change
  3. Quizzes
