| This course looks at current and past sports related cultural and historical issues and practices to study the role of sport in society.

| 2. Course Objectives - |
| The student will be able to
- Define and discuss social theories and the development of sport in society past and present.
- Analyze and discuss who plays sport, why and how it influences development.
- Discuss and analyze ethics and violence in sport.
- Evaluate and analyze the role of race, ethnicity, culture and gender in sport and society.
- Explain the role of politics and sport and how government and globalization influence sports.
- Analyze the role of media and its influence on sport.
- Discuss and develop theories on the future of sport and the athlete

| - Define and discuss social theories and the development of sport in society past and present.
- Study and evaluate Maslow's heirarchy of need and its role in sport education
- Analyze the social development of the athlete and the nature of "team"
- Compare and contrast the individual athlete to the team player
- Analyze and discuss who plays sport, why and how it influences development
- Discuss children's sport teams
- Explain social class and its potential role in sport selection
- Analyze education and the role of sport at college and high school
- Discuss and analyze ethics and violence in sport
- Explain blood doping
- Discuss on field/court incidents and media's role in sport violence
- Explain drugs and alcohol and their role in sport
- Discuss and evaluate the use of sport supplements and sport ethics
- Evaluate and analyze the role of race, ethnicity, culture and gender in sport and society
- Analyze and discuss gender participation issues and controversies
- Analyze and discuss race and ethnicity and the role of sport and the athlete in changing society and values.
- Compare and contrast cultural development and the sport influence
- Explain the role of politics and sport and how government and globalization influence sports
- Discuss history and changes of sports and world competitions
- Study and analyze the political issues that have marked sporting events
- Analyze the role of government wealth and influence of sport development
- Analyze the role of media and its influence and impact on sport
- Discuss the behavior, role and media representation of the "notorious" cases involving athletes
- Analyze sport coverage nationally and internationally
- Discuss sport and media, can they survive without each other
- Discuss and develop ideas on the future of sport and the athlete
- Analyze emerging sports
- Discuss seeding and collegiate championships and how the process is changing
- Analyze the role of the professional athlete on the changing rules of sport

| 6. Methods of Evaluation - |
| - Film analysis
- From a list of 25 films, choose five and write five (5) two page papers analyzing the role of the sport and the athlete on changing vaules.
- Group project
- Students work in small groups to develop a classroom presentation demonstrating the value of the team concept in academic success, individual values and the role of athletics and change
