1. Description -
Hands-on experience in athletic emergency care, athletic injury prevention, therapeutic treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries in the on-campus Athletic Treatment Center. Observation of orthopedic surgical procedures with the permission of the team physician is available.
Prerequisites: PHED 62A
Co-requisite: None
Advisory: Not open to students with credit in H P 52A.

2. Course Objectives -
The student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate equipment and bracing skills
  2. Demonstrate basic first aid skills
  3. Demonstrate manual therapy techniques
  4. Demonstrate and understand use of therapeutic modalities

4. Course Content (Body of knowledge) -
Instructor discussion and demonstration will teach:
  1. Equipment and Bracing Skills
    1. Football helmet fitting
    2. Football equipment fitting
    3. Orthoplast pad design and application
    4. Donut pad design and use
    5. Ankle bracing
    6. Knee bracing
    7. Shoulder bracing
    8. Elbow bracing
    9. Wrist and thumb bracing
  2. Basic First Aid Skills
    1. CPR certification
    2. First aid certification
    3. Wound care
    4. Heat illness care knowledge
    5. Crutch use
    6. Ability to measure blood pressure
  3. Manual Therapy
    1. Stroking, petrissage, tapotement massage techniques
    2. Cross-friction massage techniques
    3. Effleurage massage techniques
  4. Therapeutic Modalities
    1. Cryotherapy
    2. Thermotherapy
    3. Hydrotherapy
    4. Electrical stimulation
    5. Ultrasound
    6. Light therapy
