Music: General     (2009-2010)

The Music Department offers an Associate in Arts Degree in Music that is a comprehensive course of study preparing the student to transfer to a four year institution in music or a music related field, or to enter the music industry or a related field upon completion.
Foothill's Music Department has one of the newest and most comprehensive facilities in the U.S. Three outstanding performance facilities (The Smithwick Theatre, Appreciation Hall and Studio 1100) and all of our classrooms all boast new Steinway pianos and top of the line sound reinforcement/multimedia delivery systems. Our Interdisciplinary Electronic Arts Center features a new media classroom with 30 full Pro Tools, Reason and MIDI keyboard equipped stations along with extensive audio, video and listening libraries, a large recording studio/multimedia rehearsal space with top of the line microphones, a 32 track Pro Tools HD system, a Control 24 mixing surface and a Digital Video Editing Suite that features Final Cut Pro and top of the line hardware on all of the workstations. Our piano lab has 24 weighted keyboards, an excellent tutoring staff and all of the labs are open at hours that fit your schedule.
Career Opportunities
Career prospects in the music industry have never been more diverse or plentiful: all aspects are thriving and the opportunities are inviting. With the advent of digital music delivery systems and alternative media, music is now an integral part of the booming new media revolution. Students have the opportunity to enter the industry in a variety of positions directly and indirectly related to this media revolution. Careers are not localized: due to the phenomenal growth of new media and the communication available via the internet, opportunities exist literally anywhere the student chooses.

Associate Degree Requirements:
• English proficiency: ENGL 1A, ESL 26 or equivalent.
• Mathematics proficiency: MATH 105 or equivalent.
A minimum of 90 units required to include:
• All General Education requirements
• Core Courses (27 Units)
• Support Courses (8 Units)
• Elective Courses (4 Units)
• Other graduation requirements as appropriate.

NOTE: All courses applied towards the major must be taken for a letter grade. In addition, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher is required in all Core, Support and Elective courses for the Degree.
Program Type(s):
AA = Associate in Arts Degree.
Additional Information:
Any Support Course may be used towards the A.A. degree, but they may not be duplicated. Electives may be repeated to not exceed a maximum of 4 unit
