Database Management (2009-2010)The Database Management major is intended for students wishing to upgrade or acquire new skills in the fields of database administration, database developer, database applications design, and programming with database management systems. The course of study includes a foundation in database theory and design, and the industry standard database language. Depending on the elective option chosen, there are further courses in programming, database administration or database developer. Career OpportunitiesThe Certificate in “Oracle Database Administration” includes the coursework for the exam(s) one needs to take for the Oracle 10g Certified Associate and Oracle Professional Database Administrator credential. The Certificate in “Oracle Database Developer” includes the coursework for the exams one needs to take for the Oracle 10g PL/SQL “Developer Certified Associate and Forms Developer Certified Professional” credential. The Certificate in "Open Source Database" includes the coursework one needs to learn in order to build powerful, dynamic database-driven web sites. The Certificate in "Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Database Administration" includes the coursework for the exams one needs to take for the "Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Database Administration" credential. The use of database systems is growing even more rapidly than the computer field in general. Specific job areas open to graduates of the program are database administration, database developer, application design, and applications programming. Units required for Major: 40Units required for Certificate: 15-40 Associate Degree Requirements: The Associate in Science degree in Database Management requires the following: Program Type(s):• English proficiency: ENGL 1A, ESL 26, or equivalent. • Mathematics proficiency: MATH 105 or equivalent. A minimum of 90 Units including: • All General Education Requirements • Core courses (20 units) • Support courses from one option: Database Administration or Database Developer (20 Units) • Electives & other graduation requirements as appropriate NOTE: All courses pertaining to the major must be taken for a letter grade. In addition, a GPA of 2.0 or higher is required in all Core and Support courses for the Degree or Certificates. 50% of the major units must be taken at Foothill College. It is recommended that the student take CIS 52A and CIS 52C prior to beginning this sequence. Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP) Database Administration Skills Certificate (15 Units) NON-TRANSCRIPTABLECIS 52N PHP & MySQL (5 Units) CIS 52Q MySQL: In Depth (5 Units) CIS 52P PHP Programming (5 Units) This certificate will familiarize the students with the administration of databases in a Microsoft environment and also prepare them for the Certified IT Professional (MCITP) certification exam.
