The Personal Fitness Trainer Certificate Program is designed to meet the needs of a variety of students who wish to pursue a career in various aspects of the health and fitness industry. This comprehensive, 27-credit certificate program features a unique combination of classroom, lab, and hands-on experiences.
Overview -
You will enroll in a variety of human performance classes that emphasize the relationship of
exercise physiology and training, injury prevention and rehabilitation, nutrition, and
lifestyle behavior modification. You'll receive the most up-to-date technical knowledge
regarding fitness assessment, exercise prescription, and exercise program implementation.
The Personal Fitness Trainer Certificate Program will prepare you to enter the health and fitness industry, pursue additional education, or achieve certification through national organizations such as the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
Foothill College also offers a number of courses through other programs to complement your study,
including Sports Medicine, Adaptive Fitness, and Human Performance. In addition, students are encouraged to enroll in additional fitness and sports classes (such as swimming, stretching & flexibility, or cardio-kickboxing), to improve skills and stay in shape. Refer to the on-line course catalogue
for a complete schedule of classes available each quarter.
Required Courses -
To earn the Personal Fitness Trainer Certificate, you must satisfactorily complete the following courses:
- PT51 -- Basic Nutrition for Sports & Performance (3 units)
- PT52 -- Strength Fitness (4 units)
- PT53 -- Personal Fitness Trainer Internship (3 units) -- must be taken twice
- PT54 -- Techniques of Fitness Assessment (4 units)
- PT55 -- Concepts of Exercise Physiology (4 units) -- prerequisite to PT53 & PT54
- HP67A -- Prevention of Athletic Injuries (3 units)
- HP67B -- Emergency Athletic Injury Care (3 units)
Flexibility -
Required courses are offered both during the day and the evening. The course schedule has been developed to allow the part-time student the ability to complete the evening program within the same time frame as the day program. The certificate can be completed in as little as three quarters, or you can extend your study over a longer period of time.
