Assessments are designed to help you succeed in college. Your scores along with your background information helps you and your advisor determine which courses are most appropriate for your current level of knowledge and skills.

You must complete and submit the Foothill College Application for Admission prior to attending a testing session.


WHAT TO BRING/NOT BRING
Bring your student ID number (usually your social security number) and a photo identification.

ESL translation dictionary is allowed only for Math and Chemistry tests. Calculator (without alphabet keys or graphing) is allowed only for Chemistry test.

No textbook, notebook, or other paper (except scratch paper provided by the Test Administrator for use with the mathematics tests) is allowed in the testing room. Anyone who gives or receives help during the test or uses notes or books of any kind will not be allowed to continue the test.

DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS FOR TESTING
Placement tests are available in alternate text format such as: Braille, audio tape, large print, and e-text. To arrange for disability-related accommodation please talk with the Testing Proctor before you take the test.

CONFIDENTIALITY
Your test scores and the information you provide when taking the tests will only be provided to The College Board, to the college at which you are taking the tests or at which you are enrolled, and to the state to meet information requirements. The information may be used for counseling, advisement and placement purposes and may be used to document whether or not you have met state testing requirements. It may also be used by The College Board for research and training purposes. Your test information will not be disclosed for any other purpose without your permission. If you have any questions about confidentiality, please see your Test Administrator


TUTORIAL
If you are not comfortable using a computer keyboard or mouse, you may want to take the tutorial available on the Internet at http://www.collegeboard.org. Ask a friend or advisor to help you. If you do not have access to a computer, find out if there is a computer available on campus with Internet connections available for your use.

English

Reading Comprehension
This assessment measures your understanding of what you read. You will have 45 minutes to complete 45 questions. Each question tests one of the following: identifying the word and/or phrase meaning through context; understanding the literal and interpretive meaning; and understanding the writer’s assumptions, opinions and tone. Sentence Structure
This assessment measures your knowledge of sentence structure—the way parts of a sentence are put together and what makes a sentence complete. You will have 30 minutes to complete 30 questions. Each question tests one of the following: using complete sentences; relating ideas in sentences logically; and making meaning clear. SAMPLE QUESTIONS

Conventions of Written English
This assessment asks you to show how familiar you are with standard written English by identifying problems in sentences. You will have 30 minutes to complete 40 questions. Each question tests one of the following: maintaining consistency, using standard forms and connecting ideas appropriately. SAMPLE QUESTIONS

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Grammar/Usage:  Tests your understanding of English grammar structures in the following two areas.
  • Sentence Elements:  This part of the test measures your understanding of parts of speech (noun, verb, etc.), subjects and verbs, modifiers, function words, mechanics (punctuation, spelling, capitalization), and word forms. 
  • Sentence Structure:  This part of the test measures your understanding of word order, clauses, and relationships among clauses.

Listening:  Tests your ability to understand standard American English. Listening tasks range from identifying words and phrases that go with pictures to interpreting the meaning of academic materials.

Essay: If your grammar and listening scores are high enough, you will be asked to write an essay. You will have 45 minutes to write a multi-paragraph 300-600 word essay on an assigned topic. Your essay will be evaluated based on how effectively it communicates to the reader for the stated purpose. Your score will be based on your ability to focus on the topic, organize and support your ideas, and the effectiveness and correctness of your language.

Chemistry

Chemistry Comprehension
You have 45 minutes to complete 44 multiple choice items. A periodic table of the elements and a table of abbreviations and symbols are provided. This will determine your placement for Chem 25, or Chem 1A. An ESL translation Dictionary and a nongraphing, nonprogrammable calculator without an alphanumeric keypad is allowed.

Math Placement Test
There are three levels of tests to assess your math skills. You may have to take one or all three based on your skills.
  • ARITHMETIC TEST
    This test measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts. Before you begin there will be a sample question with the correct answer indicated. SAMPLE QUESTIONS

  • ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA TEST
    This test measures your ability to perform basic algebraic operations and to solve problems that involve elementary algebraic concepts. Before you begin there will be a sample question with the correct answer indicated. SAMPLE QUESTIONS

  • COLLEGE-LEVEL MATHEMATICS TEST
    This test measures your ability to solve problems that involve college-level mathematics concepts. All figures in this test are drawn as accurately as possible, given the limits of the equipment being used. Before you begin there will be a sample question with the correct answer indicated. You will need to use your PIN (personal identification number). If you do not have a PIN, you will be able to select one at the assessment web site.
