No-Smoking Zone Now In Effect

Smoking is no longer permitted within 25 feet (7.5 meters) of campus doorways, windows and ventilation systems. Small quad areas and narrow hallways are included in the no-smoking zone. The intent of the NO-SMOKING ZONE POLICY is to encourage no smoking, not to punish smokers.

Saying no to even one cigarette can be a positive first step to stopping smoking. Foothill College offers several smoking cessation programs, including free counseling, free Nicorette gum, free Nicoderm patches and free Zyban prescriptions. Foothill is one of the state’s first community colleges to adopt such a policy. The Foothill College Health Services Office and its See Through the Smoke Project as well as the student-led Tobacco Awareness Coalition developed the collegewide policy which was then approved by the Foothill-De Anza Community College Board of Trustees in December, 2002. The state of California, which has been waging a vigorous anti-tobacco campaign for several years, now enjoys one of the lowest smoking prevalence rates at 18.4 percent among adults in the U.S.

More than 400,000 Americans die from cigarette smoking each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Smoking increases the risk of dying from heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, and other respiratory illnesses. Annually, exposure to second-hand smoke also causes an estimated 3,000 deaths from lung cancer among American adults.
