Passes Away. Memorial Service for Roger Harm

A respected and well-loved teacher at Foothill since 1989, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was active in support of the civil rights movement. He began his teaching career in the Peace Corps and served four years in Mpwapwa, Tanzania. Upon returning to the U.S., he earned a doctorate in English from Stanford University and was active in the movement against the Vietnam War. He then taught English for several years at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle.

Mr. Harm began his work in biology at San Francisco State University in 1980, where he earned a master’s degree and taught many laboratory and lecture courses. He began his career at Foothill in 1989 and became a member of the tenured faculty in 1995. He was known for the excellence of his teaching, dedication to students and enthusiasm for the subject. In recent years, he contributed substantially to wildlife conservation, in particular for the re-establishment of gray wolf populations in the Yellowstone ecosystem. He traveled widely and returned to East Africa in 1995, and was an avid hiker and camper.

Mr. Harm maintained a keen interest in the arts. For years, a regular subscriber to the San Francisco Opera, he also loved many other forms of music as well as movies, plays and novels. In recent years, he learned to play the piano and kept up his skills in Latin, Spanish, French and Swahili.

He earned numerous college degrees, including an A.B. from the University of Pittsburgh; B.A. and M.A., San Francisco State University; and A.M. and Ph.D., Stanford University.
