Computer Information Systems Instructor Michael Loceff (at right) has been named recipient of the 2001 Technology Leadership Award by the California Community Colleges Chancellors Office Instructional Resources & Technology Unit. He was formally recognized at the Chancellors Annual Conference in Costa Mesa April 4.
Loceff was chosen for the award for his many achievements in the area of online instruction. In 1994, he created an online version of a C++ course that made Foothill College the first community college in the world to offer accredited transferable courses totally via the Internet. In 1996, he introduced ETUDES: Easy to Use Distance Education Server, a complete Web-based course management and authoring tool that he offers to colleges worldwide. His work in this field led to the development of learning management software called ETUDES Classroom that is now used by Foothill, Las Positas, Mira Costa and Taft colleges; and ETUDES Tutor which is used in the Los Angeles Community College District and Palomar College. He is the founding chairman and chief technology officer of Jamboa Learning Technology (marketing company for the Etudes Classroom), which maintains and improves the virtual classroom technology for these institutions. He teaches 150-200 students per academic quarter completely online and has done so for more than six years. The software that he created has been used by approximately 20,000 students to date.
