Opening Day Ceremony: Cultural Celebration
Kickoff entertainment will feature Mariachi Tapatio, a nine-member group who, will perform selections from its vast repertoire of traditional Mexican music. The Keynote Speaker Edward "Sandy" Hay, president of the Foothill- De Anza Board of Trustees, will welcome everyone to join in the celebration of Latino Heritage Month.

Video Presentation & Discussion: Requiem 29 Presented by Roberto Sias, Foothill Alumni, La Raza Alliance Co-Chair and Bookstore Courseware Coordinator, Video Requiem 29 documents the Chicano moratorium march that took place Aug. 29, 1970, in East Los Angeles. This event was organized by Chicano students and community activists to protest the disproportionate number of Mexican-American soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. The event was marred by the killing of three march participants including noted journalist Ruben Salazar.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration: An Evening of Entertainment
Augustín Lira and Alma Present Chicano! 500 years of Struggle. Alma is an acoustic ensemble that brings to life the Chicano/Latino experience through song and narrative while telling the Mexican-American story by focusing on their contributions and accomplishments. The program examines Mexican-American history and how they were impacted by turbulent times. It also reveals how they organized themselves to fight against racism and inequality while maintaining their culture and heritage. The group features original compositions by Augustín Lira, presents works by authors throughout Latin America, and employs the musical styles prevalent in Mexican, Latin American, American, and Afro-Cuban cultures.
Pochoson Presents Jarocho Music and features Patricio Hidalgo of Chucumbe, musicians, dancers, and visiting Son Maestro from Veracruz, Mexico, Los Otros leader Chris González Clarke; Charlie Montoya formerly of Los Otros, Dr. Loco’s Rockin’ Jalapeño Band and Hector Lugo of Son Boricura. Together, these accomplished musicians and vocalists create a musical experience that is a rich blend of African, Spanish and mestizo influences that characterize el Son Jarocho. Using a repertoire of Jarocho music that is integral to the Fandango—an interactive experience of song and dance—as their foundation, Pochoson also explores the musical links between Mexico’s gulf coast music and Cuban sones, Columbian vallenatos, and the occasional ranchera.
Los Cojolites Presents Son Jarocho Music
Los Cojolites are from Jalitipan, Veracruz they are the spearhead of a new generation of sonoeros. Son Jarocho is among Mexico’s ancient surviving musical traditions and has
its roots in the mixing of three cultures in the jungles of southern Veracruz. Los Cojolites range in age from 12 to 20 years, travel around the world playing a very modern son Jarocho with the energy of youth. They are the proud bearers of the heritage of this little known Mexican art form.

The name Huitzilopochitli means the force of our own will in our thoughts. The dances the Calipulli performs are in the Azteca elder’s tradition.

The reception and lecture will focus on the artist’s powerful mural paintings that depict social, cultural and political themes, boxed art, three-dimensional art, and its various forms, and use of laser to sculpt in plastic. Attend this event to meet the Latina artist, Patricia Rodríguez, and gain a historical perspective on Chicano Art.

The Latino Heritage Club invites the entire Foothill community to join us for a day of fun, music, and a dunk tank. Art Exhibit: Patricia Rodriguez
Patricia Rodríguez was born and raised in Oxnard, California. She graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a BFA, received her MA in painting from Sacramento State University, and is an MFA candidate at San Francisco State University. She is best known for her three–dimensional box art and murals. Sculpting with plastic by laser is her current art medium. She is also the gallery coordinator for Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco. Patricia has taught at many colleges and universities and has had her work published in various art books. Her powerful mural paintings depict social, cultural and political themes. Her boxed three-dimensional art and the use of lasers to sculpt in plastic creates an amazing and unique style.
