Jewish Heritage Month Lecture Series Part I: Jews in
Civil Rights
A
speech and discussion with Jewish civil rights activist and author of
Lishma: For His Name's Sake-The Life & Times of Rabbi Sidney
Akselrad. Rabbi Akselrad marched shoulder to shoulder with Rev.
Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s.
He will speak about his experience and involvement in the movement. A
book signing follows the presentation. Co-sponsored by the Foothill
College Bookstore.

Become part of the worldwide registry for bone marrow. It
doesn’t hurt and it’s a mitzvah or good deed. All

Event: March & Luncheon
Join
Foothill’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Luncheon &
March. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is celebrated as a great leader of
the Civil Rights movement. Dr. King’s hopes and dreams for his
people, and for this country, are still honored, and each generation
is given the honor of working to fulfill his vision. The keynote
speaker is Gail Ortega, director of Multicultural Student Affairs at
Menlo College. Co-sponsored by the Associated Students of Foothill
College Activities Board and the African American Network. First 100
students with OwlCard who sign up to march get free lunch tickets.

& Theater during the Holocaust & Beyond
Chayale Ash is a star of the Yiddish theater and a Holocaust
survivor. She has continued to perform, travel and meet with her
fans. Hear the amazing story of her life and how she used humor to
survive.

Screening

the waning months of World War II, a man and his wife are mistakenly

with a local Jewish immigrant in a struggle for dignity and survival.

Fiddler: Sing-A-Long & Film Screening
If
you love Gwen Stefani’s Rich Girl , you might be
surprised to learn that it samples the signature sound of the popular
musical, Fiddler on the Roof. Sing out with Fiddler

choruses of favorites like Matchmaker, If I Were a Rich Man,
Sunrise, Sunset, and many others.

Hip, Hip Hora! Folk Dance: Lessons & Club Day
Hip,
hip Hora! Dancers of all ability levels can learn traditional folk
dances as taught by Foothill Dance Instructor Donna Frankel. Audience
members can also compete in a Hora dance contest for prizes. This
event is during Club Day where you can visit recruiting tables, meet
club representatives and learn how to join or start a campus club.

It Mean to Be a Jewish State?
Captain Avner Even-Zohar, of the Monterey Defense Language
Institute, will speak on relevant cultural and political issues in
Israel and America today. A knowledgeable and respected speaker on
Israeli life, he has conducted extensive work at the Israel Center in
San Francisco. Co-sponsored by the Foothill Gay Straight Alliance.

is Kabbalah? You’ve likely heard it has something to do with

tradition which answers who are we, where are we from, and why are we
here.

from chickpeas in the U.S., in Lebanon it is usually made from dried
fava beans, with a handful of dried chickpeas sometimes added in.
