Transgender author Max Valerio chronicles his transition from female to male in his autobiographical book
The Testosterone Files. Learn how Valerio used hormone therapy to transition from one gender to another–and what he learned about male and female perspectives and passions in the process. Valerio will answer questions after the presentation.

Keynote Speaker: Ed Gunawan
A Foothill alumnus who recently earned an M.B.A. from Loyola Marymount University, Edward Gunawan has launched a successful career as a professional model, writer and filmmaker. His films have won international awards at the Jakarta International Film Festival and Rotterdam International Film Festival. He will answer your questions after the presentation.

Film Festival I: Family Reunion
Isold Uggadottir’s award-winning short film is a modern-day coming-out story about a young Icelandic woman living two separate lives. One in grungy New York City’s Chinatown, and the other in pristine Iceland, complete with her grandfather’s 70th birthday, including discussions about marriage, children and her future. Does she continue leading her dual life or risk outraging her family by revealing her true self?

Mehndi Body Art with Artist Karen Oeh
Mehndi artist Karen Oeh has been designing patterns and painting bodies for eight years. You might also recognize her as the program coordinator from Foothill’s Career Center. In 1999 on a trip through Egypt, she had her hands painted with henna for the first time. Since that journey, she has been mixing and experimenting with henna powder to create a semi-permanent, golden brown stain. Today, she will apply unique mehndi art for free.
You must sign up and space is extremely limited. Appointments begin at 11:55 a.m. in the Campus Center Plaza. We will also provide free do-it-yourself mehndi packets for others interested in experimenting with henna. Co-sponsored by Foothill Indian Student Association.

Fire, which was written and directed by Deepa Mehta. Due to its honest depiction of a lesbian relationship, when
Fire was first released, efforts were made to have it banned from theaters in India. Today, it’s still considered a landmark in the Indian film industry. Co-sponsored by Foothill Indian Student Association.

Local author Kemble Scott’s celebrated novel

Muslim American Author Samina Ali
Samina Ali’s award-winning novel,
Madras on Rainy Days, confronts the taboo subject of male homosexuality in the South Asian Indian community from the perspective of a Muslim woman forced into an arranged marriage. Ali is a former Foothill College English instructor, and recently returned from a pan-European tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Ali will answer your questions after the presentation.
