2001 Gay/Lesbian Heritage Month Embrace Diversity

AIDS Memorial Quilt Display
Pieces of the National AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display during Gay/Lesbian Heritage Month. Each section is a unique handmade work of art fashioned by the family and friends of individuals who have died of the disease.
Dates: June 4 – June 14

Gay/Lesbian Literature Displays
Books, poems, and plays by a wide array of Gay/Lesbian authors will be on display in the Campus Center Lounge and for sale in the Foothill Bookstore. In addition to works by featured Heritage Month authors Greg Sarris and Dell Richards, other featured authors include Walt Whitman, Edith Wharton, Gertrude Stein, Langston Hughes, and James Baldwin. Prominent authors such as these will be studied in English 5, "Gay and Lesbian Literature" scheduled for Fall quarter 2001.

Opening Day Celebration
Special Guest Speaker: Kisha Frady, Conference Director of the Women's Associated Football League (WAFL), will be here to represent the newly-formed Berkley Banchees Football team. Join members of the Foothill student Gay/ Straight Alliance, the Foothill Gay/ Lesbian Employees And Friends (GAYLEAF), and other College dignitaries for an opening day celebration.

Queer Heritage Film Festival
Screening and discussion of Queer-themed documentary films focusing on the history and heritage of the Gay/ Lesbian/ Bisexual/ Transgender community.

Author Dell Richards: Reading and Discussion
Dell Richards, author of Superstars: Twelve Lesbians Who Changed the World and Lesbian Lists: A Look at Lesbian Culture, History, and Personalities will discuss the prominence of lesbian authors in literary history.

Fun in the Sun Festival
Outreach and awareness information available, including Ye Olde Safe Sex Shop and AIDS prevention information – plus games, prizes, contests, and entertainment provided by Foothill Health Services.

Wednesday, June 6
Hollywood Screenwriter/Novelist Greg Sarris:
Award-winning screenwriter, novelist, and Native American activist Greg Sarris will read from his novel Watermelon Nights, one of the first Native American novels to feature a gay protagonist. Dr. Sarris teaches Gay/Lesbian Literature at UCLA and Loyola. Sarris has written and produced award-winning screenplays for HBO and Showtime.

Thursday, June 7
Religion and Homosexuality
Representatives from a variety of religious faiths, including the Foothill Christian Fellowship, Interfath Council, Islamic Network and the Council of Churches for Santa Clara County, will discuss the relationship between sexual identity and spirituality.

AIDS Ride Report

Foothill student Alex Butti will report on his participation in this year's annual bicycle ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise funds for AIDS charities and research. Help congratulate Alex on his ride and learn more about his adventures.

Angels in America discussion

Foothill English instructor Denny Berthiaume will host a lecture/discussion on Angels in America, the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Tony Kushner, including exclusive film footage of the play in rehearsal.

Photography Slide Presentation and Lecture
Foothill Photo Instructor Ron Herman will present slide images from his series All the World Is A Stage and The Formative Years, in addition to new images of individuals who celebrate alternative gender and sexual identities.

Keynote Address by SF Supervisor Tom Ammiano
As President of the San Francisco's Board of Supervisors, Tom Ammiano is among the best known and most highly respected openly gay politicians in America. A former teacher and former SF School Board President, Ammiano will address the past, present, and future contributions of the Gay/ Lesbian/ Bisexual/ Transgender community in American education.

Kids Coming Out in High School
21st Century students are coming out to school, friends, and family as early as junior high school. What challenges and opportunities do they face? Join a panel of local high school students (and recent high school graduates) discussing their experiences, insights, and ideals.

Foothill's Brown Bag theater performance group offers a series of one-act plays and skits on a variety of topics – including gay/lesbian identity.

AIDS/Bashing Graveyard
Conceived and designed by Foothill's Gay/Straight Student Alliance in memory of individuals who have been murdered due to their sexual identity (i.e. "bashed"), as well as those who have committed suicide due to discrimination and despair, or who have died of AIDS.
Dates: June 4 – June 15
