This raw piece of cinema focuses on a traditional Indian wedding while looking into the lives of each of the family member involved with the celebration.

This kick-off event will feature sensational drumming from San Jose Taiko. Co-sponsored by the Organizations Board of Directors (OBD/Clubs) and Asian Pacific Islander Club.

Asian Pacific Islander Month Lecture Series Part I:
Career Consultant Donavan Le
Time: 11 a.m. to Noon
Location: Room 3525

As a career consultant with Drake Beam Morin, a human resources consulting firm in San Jose, Le teaches seminars for executives, managers, and high-tech professionals on career transition issues. A frequent motivational speaker to organizations and student groups, Le conducts training on public speaking and coaches individual clients on career development strategies. Most recently, he was the keynote speaker at the 2000 California Career Education Conference.

Brush Painting: Ami Wada

Japanese brush painting is a creative art form which attempts to express spiritual depth and beauty by means of Kanji and Kana characters. Ms. Ami Wada will demonstrate her artistic abilities in paintings with a brush and ink. Her work is well recognized and is intended to capture your imagination. Please join her to create your own magical paintings.

Official Opening Ceremony: Cultural Celebration & Reception
Time: Noon-1 p.m.
Location: Cesar Chavez Plaza

Perfornances include a variety of entertainers, including the Foothill College Chorale and Foothill Indian Student Association, ZeroGravity, Richard Caviteno, Santa Raut, Himal Gurung, Ram Khanal, Asihish Hada, Dharmesh Puri and Rabin Chhetry. This event is co-sponsored by the Foothill Choral and the Foothill Indian Student Association.

Cultural Fair: India Day
Time: Noon-1 p.m.
Location: Cesar Chavez Plaza

Activities will include traditional cuisine, dance, music, art, attire of the people of India and a Henna booth. This event is co-sponsored and presented by the Foothill College Indian Students Association.

Heritage Celebration: Cherry Blossom Festival
Location: Memorial Park, Cupertino

There will be numerous events and activities to celebrate the Japanese culture and heritage. The Foothill Japanese Department will display Japanese arts and crafts along with a presentation of the bamboo species that thrive in the Foothill College Bamboo Garden.

Asian Pacific Islander Month Lecture Series Part II:
Educator Curtiss Takeda Rooks
Time: 11 a.m.—Noon
Location: Room 1501

This San Jose State professor is known for his commitment and dedication to exploring the world of Happa identity. A panel facilitated by Rooks will address issues related to "mixed race Asian ancestry." The lecture will also feature HAPPA Issues Forum Executive Director Shelia Chung.

Poet Kazuko Shiraishi

As one of Japan’s leading poets, Kazuko Shiraishi’s poems have been translated into more than 20 languages and performed in more than 30 countries. She will present a reading from her new book, Let Those Who Appear from New Directions. Book signing will be available after the presentations. Co-sponsored by the Foothill Japanese Department and and Japan Society in New York.

Author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Reception

Location: Japanese Cultural Center

A former Foothill College faculty member Divakaruni is now a world-renown writer. She has published and written several books of poetry and her work has been included in over 30 anthologies. Her book of short stories, Arranged Marriage, won critical acclaim and the 1996 American Book Award, the Bay Area Book Reviews and PEN Oakland awards for fiction. She has also published two novels The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart. Co-sponsored by the Multicultural Relations Office.

Asian Pacific Islander Month Lecture Series Part V:
Panel Discussion: WWII Uncommon Courage, Patriotism and Civil Liberties
Time: Noon-1:20 p.m.
Location: Room 1501

The panel will feature four men who were a part of the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) during World War II. They will share their stories as MIS soldiers who fought for the United States in the Pacific, and interrogated Japanese prisoners, translated documents, intercepted communications and infiltrated enemy lines. At the same time, many of their families back in the U.S. were stripped of their civil rights and imprisioned in detention camps.

Luau entertainment will include various dances from the Polynesian Islands, including the Hawaiian Islands. Catering by Touch of Aloha.

Concert: Thillana, Indian Music
Time: 5 p.m.
Location: Smithwick Theater

This concert will include talented artists performing classical Hindustani and Carnatic music. Artists featured include Ragavan Manian, a winner of several musical Subhas who has performed in Indian National Television and radio, and Muks, winner of the Composer’s Today Competition conducted by the Music Teachers Association of California. Proceeds benefit the Association for India’s Development Bay Area Chapter. Co-sponsored by the Foothill College Indian Students Association.

Authors Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo & Nancy Wang
Time: 11 a.m.-Noon

As the 1999 Artist of the Year, Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo has won the hearts of his audiences and fans. He will be joined by Nancy Wang to present Once Upon A Time....The Crane and The Butterfly. This event is sponsored by the Foothill Health Services Office.
