Foothill College begins its annual Black History Month celebration with a one-night-only performance by internationally renowned Dallas Black Dance Theatre Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. A reception follows the performance.

A contemporary modern dance company, the Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) ensemble consists of 12 professional dancers who perform a mixed repertory of modern, jazz, ethnic and spiritual works by nationally and internationally renown choreographers. The company’s talented dancers have studied, trained and performed with some of the preeminent performers and teachers in American dance.

Founded in 1976 by Ann Williams, the mission of DBDT is to provide dance opportunities for minorities and bridge cultures through performance and educational programs that reach diverse communities.

The performance at Foothill College will feature Variations, Change My Name, Perfect Praise, Pacing, Strange Humors and Smoke. Variations, choreographed by Milton Myers, is a structural composition of theme and variation. The movements develop from beginning elements of walking and running. Change My Name is choreographed by Darryl Sneed. Sneed also choreographed Perfect Praise which was first performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. during the center’s salute to Texas. Choreographed by Milton Myers, Pacing is a juxtaposition of European- and African-influenced movements—heavily rhythmic, featuring driving torso action and linear pattern accompanied by a scintillating musical composition. Strange Humors, choreographed by Robert Battle, is loosely based on tango, and deals with an argumentative, twisted relationship between two people not wanting to give way to a force that is driving them apart. Choreographed by Bruce Wood, Smoke showcases the company’s personal elegance and sense of humor.

The performance is sponsored by Foothill-De Anza Community Colleges Foundation Chancellor’s Circle, Coca Cola, Pacific Bell/SBC, Peninsula Community Foundation and Wells Fargo Bank.

Parking lots 1, 5 and 7 provide easy access to the theater. Visitors must purchase a parking permit for $2. Foothill College is located off I-280 on El Monte Road in Los Altos Hills.

Tickets are $25, general; $15 for students with OwlCard. Group rates are available. To purchase tickets, call (650) 949-7360.
