Colleges Debate Team Gearing Up for Intercollegiate Competition
New Coach Ranked #4 in Nation
This winter, Foothill will join hundreds of colleges and universities around the nation to take part in intercollegiate speech and debate competition. Under the leadership of Speech Communication Instructor Lauren Popell, the Intercollegiate Debate Program gives students the opportunity to represent Foothill at local debate tournaments, and classes are transferable and degree-applicable. Students with or without a background in competitive debate are invited to join.
In addition to helping you develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, and persuasive speaking skills, participating in the program also prepares you to join the work force or transfer to a four-year university where debate scholarships are often available, Popell says. Its also fun and a great activity for making friends at Foothill and other local colleges.
Popell debated competitively throughout college and was ranked fourth in the United States. She has also coached debate and adjudicated at national and international tournaments.
