Understanding Attention
Deficit Disorder

Dr. Daniel Amen, a national pioneer of the neurobiology of learning and brain imaging, has teamed up with Foothill College to help develop the new SPED 3: Attention Deficit Disorder for Educators & Parents course offered for the first time when Winter Quarter classes begin Jan. 3.

The course is designed to increase the understanding of the physiological and psychological impact that ADD has on students of all ages.

"Attention Deficit Disorder affects an estimated 10 percent of Americans," says Foothill Counselor Beatrix Cashmore, who will teach the new class. "We’re offering this class because our goal is to help teachers and parents develop an understanding of this very real disorder so they can employ classroom strategies for better student success and assist these students in adapting their unique cognitive styles to learning, working and living."

Students who enroll in the course will examine the six subtypes of ADD as well as learn effective coping strategies for assisting children and adults who have ADD. Students will also examine how lifestyle changes, and appropriate diagnostic treatment can impact the student with ADD. In addition to lecture presentations, panel discussions and guest speakers, the course will feature Amen’s critically acclaimed textbook, Healing ADD from the Inside Out.

Planning is underway for the course to become part of a two-year Associate in Arts Degree program in Adaptive Learning.

This class is titled SPED 3: Attention Deficit Disorder for Educators & Parents. The class is offered Thursday, Jan. 6 through March 23, from 5:30-8:20 p.m. in Room 3402. The registration Call Number for this course is 5030.
