Physics for Poets
Everything You’ve Wanted to Know about Einstein's Work but Were Afraid to Ask

Old world art imageIf math anxiety has kept you out of a physics classroom, Foothill’s five-unit PHYS 12: Physics for Poets course is designed just for you. There are no prerequisites for the class and no background in science or math is assumed.

“Our goal is to introduce you to some of the most exciting areas of modern physics, particularly those pioneered by Albert Einstein,” says Foothill Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi. “The approach is non-mathematical, with an emphasis on the key ideas that frame our concepts of space, time, matter, energy and the atom.”

You will focus on three areas of physics, including thermodynamics, the science of energy, heat, and the arrow of time; special and general theories of relativity with their mind-boggling new ideas of space, time, motion, and gravity; and quantum mechanics, the bizarre theory of the subatomic realm.

You will also examine the effects that physics concepts have had on the humanities, including poetry, fiction, music, and the public view of scientists.

Course Examines Process of Organizing Principles

Learn argumentation, logic, style, and advanced rhetorical strategies to use the metaphor for organizing a variety of principles in our world. By enrolling in the four-unit ENGL 2: Advanced Composition-Organizing Principles course, you will be introduced to critical thinking and writing from a variety of disciplines, including biology, mathematics, sociology, art and others.

Students who intend to transfer may use this course to meet a requirement for advanced writing and/or critical thinking.

“This course is ideal for students who are interested in ‘big ideas’ and dynamic in-class discussion,” says English Instructor Rosemary Arca. “We will examine the ways in which thinkers have made sense of our world in a variety of disciplines,” “For example, we will explore the enormous task of developing the Oxford English Dictionary. We’ll look at the ways that mathematicians have found order in nature by reading about fractals and chaos theory; examine patterns of thought such Cartesian logic; review films to observe how directors organize the visual for effect; and look at art, notably the work of Andrew Goldsworthy who organize the ephemeral in nature to create art.”
