Foothill Has Accounting Degree & Certificates Programs
Accounting: A Rewarding Career Investment

If you’re looking to complete a short-term certificate program, transfer to a four-year university, are changing careers or starting your own business, Foothill College offers an accounting program that will prepare you for a rewarding career. In addition to traditional on-campus classes, Foothill also offers you flexibility as many of our accounting courses can be completed online.

“As an accounting professional with the proper training and preparation, you can choose from a variety of excellent career opportunities,” says Foothill Accounting Instructor Jose Nava, CPA. “According to national labor statistics, accounting jobs are expected to increase by an impressive 34 percent by 2005. The growth of the accounting profession is attributed to increasing complexity of corporate transactions and government regulations.”

You should consider an accounting career if you excel at mathematics, interpersonal communication, and have a strong background using computers. An accounting career offers you relative job security and variety, mobility and flexibility, advancement opportunities, above average salaries and impressive benefit packages.

The accounting field is generally divided into two levels: the two-year associate degree or technical certificate level; and the four-year bachelor’s degree professional level.

At the two-year technical level, careers may include accounting clerks, bookkeepers and tax preparers—most of which offer above average salaries, impressive benefit packages, security and a variety of career advancement opportunities. You can complete the Foothill College Associate in Science Degree in Accounting in approximately two years; or you can complete a specific degree and technical certificates in accounting can be completed in 12 to 24 months. Typical salaries for accounting professionals who have completed one to two years of technical training range from $15 to $25 per hour.

The program’s core courses include financial and managerial accounting, tax accounting, business law, principles of business, business information processing, and micro and macro economics. Elective courses include Quickbooks, Excel, payroll and cost accounting, advanced tax accounting, business law, investments and small business management.

“At Foothill College, our approach to learning focuses on accounting as an applied discipline. We believe in a strong theoretical foundation, seamlessly integrated with practical, hands-on, technology-based projects,” says Accounting Instructor Sara Seyedin, Ph.D. “The Foothill Accounting Program courses, degree and certificates will give you the experience of using leading accounting software products as you develop a solid base of practical knowledge. You will also learn how to effectively and ethically incorporate accounting strategies into your career goals.”

At the four-year professional level, career opportunities may include auditors, tax advisors, financial consultants, computer system consultants, financial analysts, budget and planning analysts, and many other options. Professional degrees can generally be completed in four to five years. You can complete the first two years of study at Foothill then transfer to a four-year university to complete your bachelor’s degree.
