Help Us Launch a New Center for Innovation
CFI Open House Is Sept. 14
Foothill College has transformed its former science museum into the Center for Innovation (CFI)a regional resource for K-14 teachers that also houses the colleges largest open-access computer lab.
Through Measure E and private funding, the renovated facility opens Fall Quarter 2002, and will provide 18,000 square feet of open interactive lab space and classrooms as well as a cyber café and digital art gallery.
Under the leadership of Executive Director Gay Krause, the CFI mission is to close the Digital Divide and create educational opportunities for students and teachers by improving learning outcomes through technology training and the scholarship of learning.
The CFI Open House is Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9:3011 a.m. The event will feature tours of the new facility, remarks by educational leaders and light refreshments. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. For more information, call (650) 949-7682.
Excellent Course for ESL Students
Examine the Patterns of Culture
Students who are non-native speakers of English as well as those who speak English comfortably can explore the patterns of world culture by enrolling in the four-unit ANTH 2B: Patterns of Culture course. Students will review videos of people from all over the world, learn about the work performed by anthropologists, and practice listening and note-taking skills in lecture sessions.
The lectures are especially popular with ESL students because they are recorded on 30-minute videotapes that enable them to watch repeatedly until they feel comfortable taking notes in English, says Foothill Anthropology Instructor Elyse Barnett, Ph.D.
Course assignments are also varied to provide non-traditional course experiences to students. Assignments can include creating a genealogy of their own family; visiting a church to learn about a different religion; or answering questions that detail the difficulties of adjusting to a new culture. Students have two weeks to complete each assignment and work with a tutor before submitting the assignment for a grade. Bilingual tutors are available to meet individually with students as well as with study groups.

Foothill College alumnus Jon Nakamatsu, winner of the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, returns to his alma mater for a solo benefit recital, Sunday, June 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Proceeds will benefit Foothill fine arts programs.
