Hot Type, Cool English & Literature Courses

Enroll in Foothill English and Literature courses for personal enrichment, to satisfy general education requirements or to prepare for transfer to a four-year university. Popular four-unit English classes that will be offered this fall include:

• ENGL 4: Journalism - Examine the principles of journalism as they are applied to the production of The Sentinel, the student newspaper of Foothill College.
• ENGL 5: Gay & Lesbian Literature - Review thought-provoking readings that represent a variety of historical periods and contrasting societal attitudes toward same-sex relationships, ranging from ancient Greek and Roman texts to contemporary American poetry, fiction, drama and non-fiction prose.
• ENGL 8: Children’s Literature - Enjoy a delightful survey of children’s literature from many periods and cultures, including classics, folktales, biography, poetry, fantasy and fiction.
• ENGL 14: Contemporary Fiction - Discover a selection of fiction written between l950 and the present, with selections from around the Americas.
• ENGL 23: Modern English Function & Grammar - Develop a better understanding of linguistic concepts, and the functions and grammar of present-day American English, Black English and other English varieties. The course is relevant for those interested in refining their English, students of ESL and foreign languages, and prospective writers and language teachers.
• ENGL 46A: Survey of English Literature - Read and analyze works from Beowulf to Shakespeare to the Metaphysical Poets.
• ENGL 48A: Survey of American Literature - Discover works from the Colonial and Romantic (1620-1855) periods. Read what life was like for the reclusive Emily Dickinson, the mysterious Edgar Allen Poe and the philosophical Thoreau.
