New Class Analyzes the Music of the Fab Four

BeatleMania!
Go to class with John, Paul, George and Ringo when you enroll in the new four-unit MUS 7D: The Beatles in the Culture of Popular Music course offered for the first time this fall at Foothill College. The class meets Monday through Thursday, Sept. 24 through Dec. 14, from 10 to 11 a.m. The course is transferable to the UC and CSU systems.

“There’s still an incredible interest in this band. We’re talking about a group that broke up 30 years ago and yet its recent release of the One CD was number one in 47 countries including the U.S.,” says Foothill College Instructor Paul Davies who will teach the class. “A lot of people grew up with the Beatles’ music, but a lot of people didn’t and want to know more about this four- artist phenomenon.”

Students will focus on the influences, styles and exactly why the Beatles had and
continue to have the impact they do. We’ll also examine how today’s bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots and others have incorporated similar styles into their music.

You’ll study prominent Beatles’ albums and songs associated with the band’s evolution and stature, and their synthesis of wide variety of popular and non-popular musical styles. You’ll also examine the Beatles’ early style as well as the group’s own influence on music and pop culture in general. A variety of media consisting of videos, recordings, lecture and live performance will be used to showcase style and technique. For registration instructions, access www.foothillcollege.org or call (650) 949-7325.

Foothill Has Human Services Program

Addressing a Critical Need

Foothill offers a comprehensive Human Services Program that is designed to address the critical shortage of qualified, trained social services workers in the Bay Area. By enrolling in program courses, you can develop the skills to be employed as a juvenile hall counselor, eligibility worker, human resources technician, or a drug or alcohol counselor.

For program information, call (650) 949-7322. For registration instructions, access www.foothillcollege.org or call (650) 949-7325.

Destination: Enriched Travel Experiences

New Certificate Program

This fall, Foothill offers the new Certificate in Language Arts for Travel, a unique program designed for students who want to immerse themselves in the history, language and culture of a country before visiting it.

“The certificate is especially attractive to students who participate in the Foothill-De Anza Campus Abroad Program because they may initiate their study in the year prior to their planned trip, enriching and deepening their understanding of the culture,” says Foothill English Instructor Rosemary Arca.

Certificate program courses include Composition, Travel Writing, Literature, Language, Humanities and/or Life and Culture of the destination country. For more certificate information, call (650) 949-7543 or email ArcaRosemary@fhda.edu. For registration instructions, access www.foothillcollege.org or call (650) 949-7325.

A Galaxy of Astronomy Speakers at Foothill Lecture Series

The Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series returns to Foothill this fall. The free lectures showcase world-renowned astronomers who speak about their work in everyday language.

Founded by Foothill Astronomy Instructor Andrew Fraknoi, the series is co-sponsored by Foothill College, NASA-Ames Research Center Astrobiology Project, Astronomical Society of the Pacific and the SETI Institute. Students who register for the ASTRO 36: Special Projects in Astronomy course can earn one unit of college credit by attending all six lectures and completing a short paper.

The lecture series kicks off with Life in the Universe: Is It Just Around the Corner, an illustrated, non-technical presentation by Dr. Chris Chyba, of the SETI Institute and Stanford University, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College.

Dr. Chyba, who holds the Carl Sagan Chair for the Study of Life in the Universe at the SETI Institute, will discuss what scientists today mean by life, what familiar and unfamiliar forms of life might be out there, and just where and how we propose to look for life beyond the Earth. For lecture speakers, topics and dates, access www.foothillcollege.org or call (650) 949-7888.
