Silicon Valley Donors Contribute
$1 Million for Center for Center for Innovation
The Foothill College Center for Innovation (CFI) has exceeded the $1-million mark on its way to achieving a $1.8-million fund-raising campaign goal, according to CFI Executive Director Gay Krause. The success of the campaign is due in large part to corporate and individual contributions of leading Silicon Valley philanthropists. When completed, the 18,000-square-foot center will house the colleges largest computer lab as well as a regional K-14 teacher training facility.
To date, more than 500 Silicon Valley educators have participated in Center for Innovation teacher training programs. When our facility opens in Fall 2001, we anticipate that the center will serve more than 1,000 Foothill students, including our K-14 educators and community members each day, Krause says.
The campaign to raise money to support center programs, technology, equipment and furnishings began in 1998. Equipment purchased with the funds raised to date includes 21 iMac DVDs as well as several servers and printers. In addition, contributions have funded Learning in New Media Classrooms (LINC) teacher training courses and the Smart Valley Innovation Award.
These donors are visionaries. They understand that todays Silicon Valley teachers are molding the next generation of engineers, Web designers and E-commerce entrepreneurs who will be responsible for continuing the prosperity of Silicon Valley, Krause says. We thank these individuals and corporations for their generosity.
CFI corporate donors include the Acer Corporation, Hewlett Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Pacific Bell, Smart Valley Inc., and WYSE Technology. Individual donors and foundations who have made significant financial contributions include Ned and Jimi Barnholt, Jim and Helen Carreker, Robert and Susan Finocchio Family Fund, Grousbeck Family Foundation, Steven and Michele Kirsch Foundation, Krause Foundation, Moore Family Foundation, Jim and Becky Morgan Foundation, Dean and LaVon Morton, Bill and Brenda Murphy, Paul and Liz Nyberg, Chris and Donna Paisley, Packard Foundation, Lew and Joan Platt, David and Marilyn Pratt, Saal Family Foundation, Skoll Community Fund, Jon and Kay Tompkins Family Fund, Antonia Tu, Les and Judy Vadasz, Bob and Susan Wayman, and John and Rosemary Young.
The center will receive nearly $4 million to renovate its 30-year-old facility from Measure E funds, which voters approved in November 1999. However, Measure E dollars will not cover the costs for technical equipment, furnishings or maintenance of collaborative programs. Krause supervises center programs, including the Learning in New Media Classrooms (LINC) Program, which offers short, intensive courses for K-14 teachers in technology-related subjects. Foothills Center for Innovation is also home to SmartSchools teacher-support programs for technology integration in education. To contribute to the Center for Innovation or for more information, call (650) 949-7113 or access the Center's web site.
