Plaza Mayor Salamanca spain
Spanish is the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world with approximately 350 million speakers. In the United States, approximately 13% of the population speaks Spanish as their first language. Spanish is an official language in 21 countries on four continents.

Due to the increasing numbers of Spanish speakers in the United States as well as the economic growth of Latin American countries, knowing Spanish is an even greater career asset than ever before. Native speakers of Spanish can enhance their career opportunities as they refine their spoken social Spanish into more educated or professional Spanish.

Knowing Spanish can also be an asset when traveling to many countries and can help people develop cultural sensitivity as they experience how others think and view the world.

Foothill offers first year (SPAN 1, 2, 3) and second year (SPAN 4, 5, 6) Spanish as well as Conversational Spanish, Advanced Reading and Writing, and Spanish for Heritage speakers, which is normally offered on line. We have a daytime program on our main campus and an evening program both on the main campus and at our Middlefield Campus.

Students can also Spanish classes in the evening that are taught at a slower pace spread over two quarters. These sections are designed for working adults or students who can only attend classes once per week.

We also offer Spanish during the summer in an intensive format with two weeks of full-day instruction for each of the first three quarters of Spanish. A student can thus complete an entire year of college Spanish in six weeks during the summer.

Foothill offers an AA degree as well as certificates in Spanish. If you want to learn or improve your Spanish and immerse yourself in a foreign culture, we offer the possibility of studying in Spain every other year during the Fall quarter. Visit Campus Abroad for more information.

Credit by Exam
Students with some prior knowledge of Spanish can get credit by exam for one quarter of Spanish. Learn more.
