Study French at Foothill College
Studying French is an excellent way to enhance global awareness. More than 72 million people around the world speak French as a native language. It is the official language of 33 countries and is spoken in more than 40 countries around the world, reflecting a diversity of cultures in Africa, the Caribbean, Polynesia, Asia, the Middle East, North America, and Europe. French is the second most frequently taught foreign language in the world after English.
The study of French is an excellent choice for students wishing to enter such professions as international business and technology, international relations, travel advising, airline careers, court reporting, translating, or culinary arts. There are also positions available for those who continue into graduate work in teaching and civil service and with companies which have branches in or trade with France, parts of Canada, and several African countries. French is also an excellent tool for members of the armed forces or those planning to travel extensively.
Foothill offers first year (FREN 1, 2, 3) and second year (FREN 4, 5, 6) French as well as Conversational French, Advanced Reading and Writing, and French literature in translation, which is normally offered on line. We have a daytime program on our main campus and an evening program both on the main campus and at our Middlefield Campus. We also offer French during the summer in an intensive format with two weeks of full-day instruction for each of the first three quarters of French. A student can thus complete an entire year of college French in six weeks during the summer. Foothill offers an AA degree as well as certificates in French and study abroad program in France every other year during the spring quarter. Visit Campus Abroad for more information.
Credit by Exam
Students with some prior knowledge of French can get credit by exam for one quarter of French. Learn more.
