Employment: On Campus
Employment is considered on-campus only if it is on the campus of the school/university that issued your I-20. Generally, international students are able to find part-time positions at the bookstore, library, cafeteria or other offices at Foothill College.
Eligibility and limitations
International students are eligible for on-campus employment two weeks after the beginning of their first quarter of enrollment at Foothill College. Additionally, you have to demonstrate that you have not violated immigration regulations, are in lawful F-1 immigration status and are registered for a minimum of 12 units (except the summer quarter).
You are permitted to work up to a maximum of 20 hours per week during fall, winter and spring quarters.
Although immigration regulations allow F-1 students to work more than 20 hours per week in the summer whether or not the students are taking classes, the Foothill College employment policy for all students stipulates that during the summer, U.S. and international students are allowed to work no more than 20 hours per week during the first 6-week session whether or not the students are taking classes. After the first 6-week session, students can work full-time (40 hours per week) if they are not taking any classes or up to a maximum of 20 hours per week if they are taking classes. During school breaks, students can work more than 20 hours per week.
Procedure Before Starting an On-Campus Job: Without an SSN
International students who do not currently have a Social Security Number (SSN) need to complete the following steps:
- Secure an on-campus job. You may visit offices and departments individually to inquire if they have any positions open. You can also consult the Career Center in Room 8300.
- Once you are offered a job, ask the employing department/office to issue a letter signed by your immediate supervisor verifying your employment. The letter must be an original printed on the Foothill College letterhead and should follow a specific format outlined in the sample letter. A sample letter can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office or from the International Student Office in Room 5922. Make sure that your name on this letter appears exactly as it is printed on your I-20.
- Bring the letter issued by the employing department/office at Foothill to the International Student Office in Room 5922 and request a "Social Security Letter" to be issued by the ISO. To issue this letter, we will verify whether you are in lawful F-1 immigration status.
New students: Please wait for 2 weeks after the beginning of your first quarter at Foothill to request the "Social Security Letter" from the International Student Office.
- Apply for a Social Security Number once you obtain the two letters mentioned above. Please follow specific instructions for SSN application.
- Obtain a receipt from the Social Security Administration Office verifying that you have submitted your SSN application. Bring this receipt along with all other required documents to the Financial Aid Office and complete a student employment packet.
It generally takes about two weeks to receive the Social Security Card by mail. As soon as you receive your card, you must show it to the Financial Aid office to be added to Foothill’s payroll and start getting paid.
- You must take some of the forms from the student employment packet you receive at the Financial Aid Office back to the International Student Office for a signature. Once signed, take them back to Financial Aid.
- Read and sign the assignment card given to you by the Financial Aid office. Then the card needs to be signed by your immediate supervisor and brought back to Financial Aid.
