How do I get an intern?

  1. Call the Internship Program Office at 650-604-5560 to discuss your position needs.
  2. Be able to commit funds and provide mentoring for 6 months or 12 months.
  3. Complete an Internship Description form. This form describes the skills, requirements and funding information for a position.
  4. Interview pre-sreened candidates during one of the four hiring cycles for psotions that begin January, April, July and September.

What is the cost of an intern?

The cost can vary. Please call the Internship Office at 650-604-5560 for current cost.

How is the candidate pool identified?

Any local community college student can apply for the program. Internship Program Coordinators read all applications and screen for your specific job requirements. During a phone screening interview, Coordinators will evaluate applicant's commitment, enthusiasm and background.

Can I review applications before interviewing a candidate?

The coordinators are happy to provide application materials per your request. Please call the Internship Program Office to arrange.

What kind of students apply?

Applicants range in age from 17 to 70. Our student pool includes: students recently graduated from high school, students changing careers with extensive work experience and advanced degrees, and students returning to the work force.

Once I have an intern, what are my responsibilities?

  1. Provide continued learning opportunities for the intern through meaningful assignments.
  2. Ensure the work environment is conducive to student learning and productivity.
  3. Determine quarterly goals with the student and evaluate progress at the end of the quarter.
  4. Review monthly time cards for accuracy and sign.
  5. Maintain regular communication with the Internship Program Coordinator.

What if an issue or problem arises with my intern?

Contact your Coordinator immediately and she will assist both you and your intern in resolving the issue as expediently as possible. Official policies of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District Board of Trustees stipulate that students have certain rights and privileges with respect to due process.

What should I do if my intern needs to travel during his or her internship?

Business travel for interns needs to be documented before the student leaves, using the Intern Travel Form.This form can be picked up in the Internship Program Office. All NASA/Ames travel expenses must be paid for through Invitational Travel funding (If you have questions, contact Nonnie Braxton at 4-5811). All travel expenses for interns working with Ames contractors or private industry companies must be paid for by the contracting company.
