Students will be placed by instructor in a 6 hour per week GIS internship with local company or government agency. Practical work-experience applying GIS skills learned as part of the GIS certificate program. Students must submit a written report summarizing work completed through the internship. PrerequisitesThere are no prerequisites for this course. It is strongly recommended that the student complete GEOG12 and GEOG52 (Introduction to GIS and Advanced GIS) before beginning the internship. Course OutlineThe instructor will arrange the internship for the student, and provide him/her with an individualized project description and information about the internship and its supervisor. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the internship supervisor to arrange a schedule for the internship to be completed. Student must submit a 5 page typed report summarizing his/her activities in the internship no later than the last week of the quarter (see 'Final Report' section below') as well as a copy of his/her time sheet signed by the internship supervisor.

The participation grade is based on the work accomplished during the course of the internship and the student's successful completion of the 72 hours of internship work. Student will complete a time sheet detailing his/her time spend in the internship. The time sheet must be verified by the student's supervisor in the internship (by signature) and turned in with the final report.
The final report should be no more than 5 pages typed. You should include:
* Problem statement A summary of the project that you are working on and the problem that you are trying to solve.
* Background: A brief background (1 paragraph) discussing why you are interested in this problem, or why you feel it needs to be solved and addressing the project goals.
* Procedure: A discussion of the steps you took to answer your problem. This should in conjunction with the Results and conclusion section should form the majority of your report.
* Results: A summary of your results (in this section you just report the facts).
* Conclusions: A paragraph or more in which you interpret and draw conclusions from your results, and addressing the project goals.
* Impressions/Reactions One paragraph summarizing your impressions of the internship. What aspects of it did you like? What aspects did you dislike?

Plagiarism (see Foothill college definition of plagiarism at: http://www.foothill.fhda.edu/news/honor.html) on any assignment or exam in this course will result in an F on that assignment/exam for the first infraction, and an F for the course for subsequent infractions. All incidents of plagiarism will be reported to the Dean of Students.
