How to Apply
To Apply to the Conservatory program, you will need:
Along with the written *application, acceptance into the Conservatory is by audition only. Students are asked to prepare two contrasting monologues, one modern and one classical, of no more than two minutes in length each. You will also need to write a short essay telling us why you would like to be a part of the Conservatory, and what you feel you could bring to the program. We ask for two letters of recommendation from persons who have been in positions of some authority in your life, such as teachers, directors, and employers. Please provide your references with the proper *recommendation form.
Auditions for the fall 2008 Conservatory class will be held on Saturday, August 16th, 2008. Students are admitted into the Conservatory once a year. To set up an audition appointment, or to be added to the mailing list for upcoming auditions, please call (650) 949-7053, or send an email to ftc@foothill.edu.
The Schedule
Conservatory class time follows the academic schedule of Foothill College as published in the campus brochures. Students accepted are scheduled from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This regular time block facilitates a flexible schedule, changing as needed to best serve the educational goals at hand.
Enrollment and Fees
Each quarter, registration is equivalent to approximately 18 units. Tuition and fees equal approximately $360.00 per quarter, excluding books and materials. Students who complete the full, two-year, Conservatory program receive a certificate of completion.

English 1A Eligibility Requirement
Your acceptance into the Conservatory is contingent upon your successful completion of English 1A eligibility. This can be satisfied in a variety of ways:
- If you have a degree or have attended other colleges you can submit a transcript with your application (an unofficial copy is fine) to verify, by our judgment, successful completion of English 1A eligibility.
- For high school students graduating this year, you have three options:
- If you have successfully passed a college level English advanced placement course with a grade of C or better while in high school, this will fulfill the 1A eligibility requirement. Just please submit your transcript with your Conservatory application.
- You may take the Foothill English placement test prior to graduating. To do so, begin the application process for Foothill College. This can be done online at www.foothill.edu. In order to complete your Foothill application prior to high school graduation, you need to fill out the K-12 permission form (which is also online). This form needs to be signed by your high school principal and returned to the college. Once your application is complete, you may then take the placement test.
- You may wait until you have graduated from high school, and take the test then. Please contact the Conservatory office at (650) 949-7053 for information regarding testing deadlines.
- For those who have already graduated from high school but have yet not attended a college, or those who have attended previously and not satisfactorily passed English 100 and 110 or tested out of those classes, you must take the Foothill English placement test and score well enough to qualify for enrollment in English 1A.
- For ESL students, you must either pass ESL 26 with a grade of "C" or better, or take the assessment test and score as eligible for English 1A.
- To take the test: please go to the assessment page of the foothill website, www.foothill.edu/placement/testdates.html for information regarding drop-in testing days, or scheduling a time to take your test. If you cannot make the walk-in test time, other times may be available Monday - Saturday by appointment only. The assessment office is in room # 5006, and the test coordinator is Kathleen Turner. To contact her directly about scheduling a test, please email her at turnerkathleen@foothill.edu.
- If you are out of the area, you have the option to take a proctored version of the test at your local junior or community college. To schedule the test, please have your local assessment office contact Kathleen Turner via the email provided above.
- After taking the test your scores will be given to you immediately (if you take the test on the drop-in date). Please include a photocopy of your score sheet with your Conservatory application. Please contact the Conservatory office at (650) 949-7053 for information regarding testing deadlines.
- If your score is deficient in either reading comprehension or writing skills, your acceptance into the Conservatory will be contingent upon successful completion of English 110, or English 100 AND 110, or ESL 26. If possible, you may complete the necessary course during the summer term. (The summer school option only applies to students who audition in May or June).
- If your scores were deficient in the above listed classes, you would have to satisfactorily complete those courses before re-applying to the Conservatory the following year.
