The Conservatory Concept

image from rehearsalsThe Foothill Theatre Conservatory has established itself as a major training ground for serious actors. With faculty renowned for a variety of approaches to theatre training, students are given a broad base of theatrical education and exposure. In addition to the in-depth course curriculum, the Conservatory students present productions in the Smithwick Theatre as well as the intimate Foothill Studio Theatre.

Based on the conservatory model, and centered around regular and rich performing opportunities on the beautiful Foothill campus, this diverse curriculum explores all areas of theatre training:

  • Acting (stage and camera)
  • Voice and Speech
  • Movement and Dance
  • Theatre Literature and History
  • Directing
  • Make-up
  • Stage Management and Theatre Technology
  • Auditioning and the Business of Acting
  • Theatre Production

A minimum commitment to one full year (three quarters) of Conservatory study is required for consideration for admission. Preference will be given to prospective Conservatory students intending to remain with the program for the full two year (six quarter) period, during which a comprehensive grasp of theatre performance and production may be gained.

The Third Year
Students who successfully complete the two-year program may apply for and be accepted in to a third year program, in which they may be placed in a variety of leadership orientated capacities within the Conservatory- assistant teachers, tutors, directors, production managers. Additionally, third year students may assume apprenticeship positions at other local theatre programs where continued experience may be guided and monitored by Conservatory faculty.

Students Wishing to earn the Associate of Arts Degree
Students who also fulfill Foothill's General Education requirements may earn the Associates of Arts Degree with a major in Drama. Because of the intensive nature of the Conservatory, such a goal may necessitate a third year of college attendance or attending summer sessions to complete all general education requirements.
