You will be asked to answer one of the following:

1. Explain reasons many believed caused the depression of 1893 and how this perception may have led to the international involvement that marked the period after 1893. In your answer, explain what you believe to be the reasons for America's involvement in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine War, and the acquisition of Hawaii.

2. Discuss the industrial and rural rebellions (or disruptions) in the USA from 1877 to 1896. What do you believe provoked these disruptions? What did they say about American society?

3. The political parties of the Gilded Age were accused of not responding to the problems of most Americans. What were the issues of the era, how were they addressed, and what developments finally caused the parties to become more dynamic?

4. Discuss the manipulations and plots carried out in the 1890s to acquire Hawaii and to control Cuba. Be sure to reveal who controlled these plans and for what reasons.

5. Compare and contrast the conflicts with the Indians with the conflicts with labor during the Gilded Age.

6. How did rapid industrial growth change worklife and homelife for the American workers in the Gilded Age?

7. Discuss the impact of Social Darwinism on the Gilded Age, and then compare this doctrine with that of the Gospel of Wealth.
