  1. Which issues do you feel were most central to provoking the civil war. Defend your position by discussing specific events from the 1850s.

  2. Select three major battles during the Civil War and explain why you believe they were critical turning points in that conflict.

  3. Show how the Fugitive Slave Law, intended to be a compromise, made things worse in both North and South.

  4. Summarize the events of the Kansas-Nebraska controversy and its consequences.

  5. Compare the North and South in terms of ability to fight the war. Considering the advantages the North had, analyze why it took the North as long as it did to defeat the South.

  6. Your text points out that racism was one of the major forces that drove Reconstruction and undermined it. Illustrate this with examples.

  7. Discuss the hypothesis that the South lost the war but won the peace.
