History 17A Fourth Essay

You will be asked to answer one of the following:

  1. Had you lived between 1820 and 1860, which reform movements would have been most attractive to you? Select three and tell why these seem to be of special importance to you. Give historical examples of why these would have occupied your attention.

  2. Explain how slavery affected economic, diplomatic and political life in the United States in the period 1836 to 1850. How did slavery affect expansion of the United States in this period?

  3. Describe the many ways in which the South tried to close ranks against real and perceived threats to their system after the 1830s.

  4. Henry David Thoreau questioned the market revolution and its costs. Discuss his ideas and their relevance to today.

  5. Compare and contrast the difficulties that Irish immigrants had in the 1840s and 1850s with other immigrant groups of today. Do you see similarities? Differences?

  6. Discuss the problems of immigration that America's urban centers faced and were unable to solve in the 1830s-1850s. To what extent do these problems exist today?

  7. Ralph Waldo Emerson predicted that "Mexico will poison us." Discuss the problems he referred to and how they manifested themselves in the 1848 election.
