ADDITIONAL DENTAL HYGIENE INFORMATION
The Dental Hygiene Program begins in the Summer and extends two years. There is no evening program offered for Dental Hygiene. All courses must be taken in sequence and passed with a grade of “C” or higher. At the end of the two-year period, graduating students will receive an Associate of Science degree and will qualify to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and the California State Board Dental Hygiene Examination. Successful passage of these examinations qualifies the graduate for dental hygiene practice.

Twenty-four students are admitted to the program each year. College background, with emphasis in the Biological Sciences listed below, is recommended. The minimum GPA for these science courses is 2.75: BIOL 40A,B, C, BIOL 41, BIOL 45, BIOL 46. Previous work experience in the dental profession is desirable. Anatomy and Physiology studied in a language other than English will not be considered. Selection is made from a large group of qualified applicants and is based on criteria approved by the Foothill College Administration and consistent with State regulations. The criteria includes college units, GPA, science background, and related work experience. It is strongly recommended that science courses be taken within five years of being accepted to the Dental Hygiene program.

The number of laboratory and clinic hours make it difficult for a student to work while enrolled in the Program. Candidates must carefully evaluate their financial status and plan for the following expenses: texts, instrument kit, clinical supplies, and miscellaneous expenses. Annual liability insurance is required.

NOTE: Physical examinations and immunizations are required for clinical internships. Background screening and drug testing may be required by clinical facilities. Positive results could impact a student's chances of attending clinics, completing the program requirements or gaining a license to practice upon graduation. The cost of required physical examinations, background screenings and drug tests will be paid by the student. Students accepted into the program will be provided with specific details.
