Biotechnology     (2007-2008)

Career Opportunities
This program is designed to prepare students for jobs as entry-level laboratory technicians in a variety of areas, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical laboratories. Students who complete the program in a satisfactory manner will be awarded a Career Certificate in Biotechnology. Completion of the program allows graduates to compete for jobs in laboratories involved in research, product development, manufacturing, quality control, and clinical studies. A two year expanded program in Biotechnology is also available. This two-year course sequence leads to an Associate in Science degree in Biotechnology, and offers the student the ability to transfer to a four-year program or to enter the job market with additional technical and theoretical training and background. Units required for Major: 72.5-75
Units required for Certificate: 61.5-64

Associate Degree Requirements:
• English proficiency: ENGL 1A, ESL 26 or equivalent.
• Mathematics proficiency: MATH 103/105 or equivalent.
A minimum of 90 units required to include:
• All General Education requirements
• Career Certificate Requirements (61.5-64 Units)
• Six additional units of BTEC short courses
MATH 10 Elementary Statistics (5 units)
• Electives & other graduation requirements as appropriate.

NOTE: All courses pertaining to the major must be taken for a letter grade. In addition, a GPA of 2.0 or higher is required in all Core and Support courses for the Degree or Certificates.

Program Type(s):
AS = Associate in Science Degree.
CCC = Career Certificate.
Prerequisites
• MATH 101, recent high school algebra or Foothill College Math Proficiency Exam
• ENGL 100/110 or ESL 25, or Foothill College English Proficiency Exam
• BIOL 10 or recent high school biology
• CHEM 30A and CHEM 30B* (prerequisite for BTEC 51A, 52A, 53A series)

ASSOCIATE DEGREE OPTION
A two year expanded program in Biotechnology is also available. *UC transfer students are strongly recommended to take CHEM 1A, 1B, and 1C.
