2007 Season Recap

The Foothill College Men's Soccer Team finished 2007 with a top 15 national ranking and a 17-6 record.  Thirty-one players representing nine different countries came together and propelled Foothill College Soccer to one of California’s top community college soccer programs. Foothill won their first 10 games scoring 46 goals and only giving up 3. They ended the year with 71 goals for and only 20 against.  More impressive than their dynamic offense and tough defense, Foothill’s team was visibly unique. These athletes from such different backgrounds loved playing together and spending time with each other off the field.  Life long friendships were born between young men who if not for their love of the game and Foothill College, would never have met.  It is this above all, which separates Foothill College Soccer from most other college soccer programs.

Foothill won their first play-off game of the 2007 season 2-0 on a beautiful fall afternoon against Canada College.  The 500 plus fans saw Regis Kouassi (Ivory Coast) score the games first goal heading in a perfect ball from Giovanni Linares  (Sweden).  Ben Moukoko (Sweden) scored the games second goal on a diving header.  Alexander “coral fish” Dellstrand (Sweden) beat three players along the end line playing the ball to the outstretched Moukoko.  Victor Miramontes (San Jose) made nine unbelievable saves preserving the shutout.  Coach Liner said it was the finest goalkeeping performance he had seen in many yearsGiovanni Linares (Sweden) kept the midfield together with his work rate and unmatched skill. Shane Clark (Palo Alto) was the only Foothill player to play every minute of every game during the 2007 season.  Even a late injury couldn’t take Shane out of this game.  His determination and will was contagious to every player on this team.

The next game proved to be too much for the Owls.  “We played a very tough, talented, and deep Santa Rosa side”, said coach Liner.  Ryusuke Omata, (Japan) dislocated his elbow in this game, which hurt Foothill’s offense.  Omata, a Regional All-America selection was responsible for 19 goals and 12 assists during the 2007 season. The soccer season ended that day in Santa Rosa but the players of the 2007 season will always be a TEAM.

The student-athletes and coaches on this 2007 team knew this was a special group early in the season; this will be validated in the years to come with all the friendships that continue to flourish.
