2011 Season Recap
The 2011 Foothill College Soccer Team completed the season ranked # 9 in the United States by the NSCAA!
The Owls end of the season record was 15-2-5
(wins, losses, ties). The team began pre-season training August
15th at 8:00 am with 49 players trying to make 25 roster spots. Three weeks of two a day training
sessions were demanding and important in building the identity of this special team. "From the first day
I could tell I had a group of young men that wanted to win and were willing to do what
it took to be good", said Coach Liner. It wasn't long before the players and
coaches started to see some key positions being filled by talented players.
, freshman goalkeeper from Sweden, only allowed 16 goals in 20
regular season games. He earned Regional All-American honors
and was #2
in minutes played and Goals Against. He was the only player
on the team to play every minute of every game of the 2011 season.
Sophomore defender, Chris Rosales
, had another stellar season in Defense.
He was voted 1st Team All Conference
and had the game-wining goal over Evergreen
Valley College. Chris will play for Cal Ploy Pomona in 2012
. Playing next to
Chris was standout freshman Juan Martinez
. "Juan reads the game extremely
well and was able to lead from the back", said Liner. Swedish Sophomore Captain,
, was Foothills most versatile player in 2012. He was responsible
for winning balls in midfield and towards the end of the season Coach Liner moved him
to center back because of an injury to Martinez. Sylvester was also 1stTeam All-Conference.
Another ball winner in midfield for the Owls was freshman, David Preston
. "Preston as he is
referred to on the pitch had some huge games this season. He came into camp a couple weeks
late as a UC Davis transfer and it didn't take long to see he was going to be a vital part of our
team", said Liner. Tung Le, an Attacking Midfielder from Sweden
was the engine of the team.
He scored 11 goals and had 5 assists
. "Tung was such an important part of our side this year.
It was his determination, speed and work rate Foothill relied on to set the pace of games", said Coach Liner.
also received national recognition by earning Regional All-American honors
. Playing alone
up top for Foothill in 2011 was Sophomore All-American, Kramer Runager!!! Kramer was 4th in
California in scoring. He scored 19 goals and 15 assists in 20 games.
Coach Liner said,
"Kramer is one of those players you see once in a decade. He has power, speed, agility, size
that are important physical attributes. What set him apart from others is his ability to take
over a game".
On Tuesday, October 25th, the fans at the Foothill Soccer Complex witnessed something they
won't soon forget. Foothill, ranked #8 in the nation was hosting Hartnell College, #7
in the nation and #2 and # 1 in Northern California. "Matchups like this don't happen
often during the regular season", commented Liner. Both teams were up to the challenge
but Hartnell took a 2-0 lead going into halftime. 15 minutes into the second half Runager,
elevated above the Hartnell defense and snapped a header past the opposing keeper making it 2-1.
12 minutes later, freshman Giovanni Luna, broke through their defense and was taken down for a
penalty kick. Runager stood over the ball and seconds later, buried the pk. The game was now
tied 2-2 with just over 18 minutes left. Foothill keeper, Calle Carrwik came up with a huge
save in the 41st minute keeping the score deadlocked. With 30 seconds left in injury time,
freshman defender, Brad Sorensen pinged a ball 45 yards across the field into Hartnell's penalty
area. Out of nowhere came Runager, sprinting, and then diving to head the ball past the
keeper at the near post. 9 seconds later the final whistle blew capping off a stunning
team and individual performance. "This was the finest game I have been involved with
in years," replied Liner.
The Foothill College Men's Soccer Team finished the regular season ranked #2
in Northern California and earned a first round playoff bye. In the second
round they hosted Evergreen Valley College. Again, the Owls found a way to keep
this successful season alive winning 4-1. The following game in the third and final
round of Nor Cal Playoffs had everything on the line. The winner would play in the
State Final Four. Foothill faced CCSF, a team they beat 4-1 in conference play.
On this day the season ended for the owls. "What a great season it has been", commented Liner.
The Men's Soccer Team only lost one game during the regular season and only four in the past two years.
"We can measure our success in terms of wins and losses but I like to focus on the
friendships that have been formed by players with such different back grounds.
These players loved competing together and made Life Long Friendships. I know in
years to come, we will all look back on the 2011 seasons and think about how special
this team was", said Liner.
