Student Tutorial Evaluation Program (STEP)

The Student Tutorial Evaluation Program (STEP) provides academic support services, classes and accommodations to Foothill College students who have learning disabilities and are eligible for services.

STEP is staffed by two Learning Disabilities Specialists/ Instructors, Russell Wong and Teresa Ong.  You can find out more about us below.

STEP classes include the following:

ALLD 206, Paragraph Remediation
A systematic and progressive paragraph development class with an emphasis on writing concisely with correct grammar.

ALLD 207, Basic Math Remediation
A systematic and remedial math class with an emphasis on basic math skills

ALLD 211, Enhancing College Success (Summer Academy Only)
This course is for students enrolled in Summer Academy.  Students identify goals and strategies for their college and academic career.  Includes field trips to various Bay Area colleges.

ALLD 601, Understanding Learning Differences
Focuses on learning differences, learning theory and strategies related to specific learning challenges.  Create a learning portfolio to identify learning style, strengths and weaknesses.

ALLD 602, Math Support for Pre-Algebra
Practice in understanding pre-algebra concepts and skills, but not limited to arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages and rations.  Co-requisite: student must be concurrently registered in Math 230 or Math 300.

ALLD 603, Student Success Strategies
In this course, students will develop awareness and understanding of their disabilities as they enter college life at Foothill College.  All students who require services and accommodations for the first time are highly encouraged to take this course.  Students will learn the policies and procedures for obtaining accommodations and other services at Disability Resource Center (DRC). 

STEP services may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Liaison and advocacy services between students and college staff
  • Specialized tutoring
  • Academic, career and personal counseling
  • Priority Registration
  • Referrals to Disability Resource Center for services such as in-class note takers, books on tape, tape recordings of class lectures, extended time testing, use of word processing equipment, and alternative examination administration
  • Referrals to Computer Access Center’s assistive technology hardware and software


STEP Faculty

Russell Wong
Russell received his M.A. in Special Education from Santa Clara University. Before coming to Foothill, Russell worked at CSU (East Bay) as Learning Disabilities Specialist.  He enjoys playing sports and spending time with his family.

Teresa Ong
Teresa received her M.A. in Special Education from New York University. She was previously Learning Specialist at New York University, Assistant Director of Disability Services at University of San Francisco prior to her arrival at Foothill College.  Her interests include blogging, cats and cooking with her family.
