Student Tutorial Evaluation Program (STEP)
STEP Application
Application Process
To qualify for S.T.E.P. services, a student must be certified as eligible for learning disabilities services in compliance with the California Community College guidelines.
This process of certification is as follows:
- Students should visit the D.R.C. (Disability Resource Center) office at the Foothill College Campus, Room 5801.
- All students interested in services will make an appointment with an LD Specialist.
- Students will fill out an Intake Questionnaire and then review it with the LD Specialist to determine if continuing assessment is appropriate. Any previous documentation of learning disabilities will be evaluated to determine whether it meets the criteria of the L.D. eligibility model.
- Students continuing the assessment will enroll in the two-unit class, ALLD 201: Diagnosing Learning Disabilities. Appointments for testing will be scheduled for 1-2 hour individual sessions. Approximately four testing sessions will be needed for completion.
- After testing is completed a conference appointment is made. During the conference appointment, results of the assessment will be shared, including information about cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. This information will be the basis of recommendations for services and accommodations.
- All students eligible for services must complete a Student Educational Contract or SEC once during the academic year. The SEC will have information regarding accommodations and long-term academic goals.
- Each quarter, students are responsible for filling out a form for current classes and instructors. A letter will be written to each instructor identifying needed accommodations. The student is responsible for presenting the letter to the instructor. It is highly recommended that the student speak with the instructor during an office hour with a brief explanation of how the accommodation benefits learning and success.
